Re: Bending Aluminum Pipe?

"Go to a mufler shop. They will have a tube bender and will be gald to bend your tubing for a small fee. " Muffler shops have benders meant for relatively thin wall exhaust pipe. The dies they use are different than a conventional tube bending die. There's a chance if the size pipe is near...

Re: hard steel turning

"I am thinking my punches are maybe a 62 hardness and made of M2 or A2 but regular carbide is just messing them up." Most punches, like Roper-Whitney sheet metal type, are much softer than Rc 62. The punches used in CNC punching machines tend to be quite hard though. BTW, I've made punches...

Re: hard steel turning

tnta, The process of turning hardened steel is referred to as "hard turning". It's done on rigid CNC lathes with special inserts. Not a process for the average home shop guy. Thor punch company tells me they make their punches from pre-heat treated blanks and "hard turn" the busi...

Re: ID on Cont Cast Iron Bar

"if there is a standard color coding system for ID'ing alloys of continuous cast iron bar (such as Durabar) like there is for rolled steel alloys? " Wish that was true, but there is no standard color coding system for steel alloys. Every vendor and mill seems to use a different color codin...

Re: Bend angle on Di-Acro Brake?

I have customers with the latest and greatest in CNC press brakes. Supposedly, these will do an accurate bend angle the first time. They tell me at least one test piece is still needed so you aren't alone with this problem. One thing to watch out for in "sneaking" up on a bend. Once you re...

FWIW, I've been told some of the newer VFD's can tolerate switching devices between them and the driven motor.

Re: Bison face cutters

Those type cutters may be okay for very light work. With the clamp holding mechanism for the insert these are not at all in the same league with the Kennametal and other types using screw down inserts. Taking an angled plunge with a clamped milling insert may cause the insert to move in it's pocket....

Re: Chrome cylinder rod

Hmmmm....you guys are talking about plated cylinder rod. Back in the sizties when I was in college I had a job at Cunningham MFG in Seattle. Their main product line was pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders. They advertised as being the first cylinder manufacturer to use hard chromed rods. I know the ro...

Re: Sheet Metal Cutters

Uhh, Doug......

You already have a cheap knock-off wheel type shear that you say doesn't perform as expected.

Do you really want to buy a Beverly knock-off that also won't perform as expected?

As with all tools, you get what you pay for.

"In trying to determine a fair value for this stuff, he looked up all the list prices in the MSC book, and offered the lot to me for 25 cents on the dollar. " You haven't given us much info on this guy, but a number of times I've seen older guys shutting their shops for retirement who don'...
