Machinery scrappers are like any other scrappers, they get there money right away from whatever they bring in. How many good old cars could be back on the road today if the car/ truck scrappers would store and then advertise them. But they would have to put more effort, etc.. into the job.

After setting the jaws close using the scribed lines, I used to indicate the corners of the square stock to get it close, then depending on how big a piece it was I would either pull the indicator rod away when the corners came around or I would move the carriage to the side. We had to cut slots across shafts and our mill vice did not have V's in the jaw to keep the shaft square. This way you were always on center. I haven't used it for anything else as yet.

Here is a pic of the spare 3 jaw Southbend chuck I bolted onto a flatplate and had the welder make two slots on an arc. Much more stable than a vice, I used it at work before retiring.
