Re: Grizzly G9729 Horizontal Lead Screw

Thanks guys for your suggestions and help. I haven't done anything out in the shop for several months due to the heat down here in Tampa, Florida. It has cooled off now and will be back out in the shop soon. I kinda new to machining and have no mentors around to guide me thru machining processes. Mo...

Re: Grizzly G9729 (After Action Report)_

Just keep on plugging away at trying to make my machine a little better. Today I made a chip shield that is attached to T-Nuts and slides back and forth in the cross slide. I also made a pencil die grinder holder that fits in my QCTP. Still concerned about the rack and pinion squeeze and may be caus...

Re: Grizzly G9729 Horizontal Lead Screw

Grizzly told me that the lead lead screw was .780" diameter with a left hand 6 TPI. This I already knew. Seems that, doing a little reading, that Acme screws are 29 degrees in pitch. Now all this being said I don't find any taps for sale using this information. While looking around a roughing/f...

Grizzly G9729 Horizontal Lead Screw

I have the Grizzly G9729 17x31 and would like to try my hand at making my own half nut. At $75 a pop I need a spare or two. I've already replaced it once and they wear fast even when frequent cleaning and lubing. Question "is" does anyone know what the Acme type/TPI/pitch is for the lead s...

Re: Grizzly G9729 (After Action Report)_

Two of the best things I did for it was to make bolts to adjust the gib on the lathe bed and add .006" shims between the carriage gear box at the rear and .002" on the front. This took the "squeeze' off the pinion and rack.

Re: Grizzly G9729 (After Action Report)_

I have the ShopTask Tri-Power and have had my share of problems with it. I hate to think that something could be worse, but know that it is so. I gotta say though that things are getting better after tackling some of the problem areas. Guess my disgust is that everything has to be worked on ...

Grizzly G9729 (After Action Report)_

I had my Grizzly G9729 for several months now and have a few comments. I've had soooo many problems with this machine. I guess the best way is to just list my problems. 1. The horizontal feed pinion gear had to be replaced cause it was so pitted and rough operation. The new gear wasn't much better a...

Re: DC conversion on lathe.

"IF" I were to cut a pulley groove in the flywheel, newbie alert, should I cut the groove twice at 16 degrees on right and left? I guess a single cut would be difficult because it is steel rather than aluminum. I saw where a guy in Australia cut one with a parting tool "but" was ...

Re: DC conversion on lathe.

I don't know the purpose of the resistor. I don't remember. I do know that before I clipped it, the motor was either on or off, with no adjustment possible. I didn't really need 5000 RPM. I bought a couple 5k and 10k pots to bench test the components before I do any mods. Do know the physical locat...

Re: South Bend Heavy 10, Crying in my beer!

After sleeping on it a couple of nights, I think I'm going to pass on this opportunity. I really like the South Bend but the timing just isn't right for me at this time. If anyone is interested in the lathe, PM me and I'l give info where you can contact the seller. He's fixing to list on Craigslist ...

Re: DC conversion on lathe.

Keeping the flywheel can smooth out the controller pulses mechanically and give a better finish, just turn the ribbed belt portion down smooth to a size you can slip a v-belt sheave over. Also, if you run SCR (no experience with PWM) keep the big motor choke inline to further reduce the choppiness ...
