Re: Mystery rifle a guy brought me

That looks a lot like the bolt from my 71/84 mauser. It is 11mm, or .446 Cal. Mine is a repeater, the single shot one was the model 71

Re: rotary table

I have an 8" rotary, the cheap grizzly one, and I bought an 8" 4 jaw chuck and mounted it to it. It is extremely handy. I have a 3617 mill..

Re: The home shop machinist, health of the hobby

I recently got a position with a title because of my home shop. I have a lathe and a mill and a few other things. I am self taught, which really means that I have stolen or begged information to make my machines do what I can do with them. A friend of mine is a HD Mechanic instructor at the local Co...

affixing an aluminum bronze bushing to steel

Gentlemen... I want to make some new larger area centering rods for the steady on my lathe. I have some aluminum bronze to tip them with ( it is bushing stock, not welding rod), firstly, is this a good choice? and secondly, how will I attach it?. Thanks.

Re: The Cheap Tool guy got me...

I took a couple hours and made a drawbar. This was just so I could grab small drill bits.

Re: Alloy question

That makes sense that it would be 316... I made a drawbar for the milling machine.Ias am sure it is the rarest of drawbars being stainless. I needed a different drawbar as I have 1 keyless chuck on R8 adaptor that has 12x1.75 threads.

Re: Alloy question

Harold.. I think it may be some breed of stainless. I am familiar with the heat treating colours from light straw to deep blue, and this is none of these. This piece of shaft started its life somewhere in a pulp mill, It has been so long on my shelf I cannot recall where it was in the mill. this cut...

Re: Shop Build (help appreciated!)

If I were doing it again, I would have the machine tools inside a small room. A lathe and a mill do not call for that much floor space, but it is nice to keep them clean. Outside that wall can be the welding, drill press and wood work that will be done.

Re: The Cheap Tool guy got me...

they may be 12x1.75... come to think of it.. a 7/16 NC tap went in but was a bit loose... I did the math.. that is 1.81 mm pitch.. I will try a 12 mm bolt..

thanks.

The Cheap Tool guy got me...

I bought a chinese keyless chuck for the milling machine, and it came with a R8 adaptor. Well, they got me.. This is the first R8 adaptor that I have seen that had 7/16" NC threads... I am making a draw bar for it, as it is less work than sending it back. This drawbar will last for ever, as I doubt ...

Alloy question

I am turning a piece of mystery shaft, and it cuts ok but not bright with HSS, and the Trigon cutter cuts it nicely. What I am wondering is if anyone knows what it is. Strangely, the cuttings come off a gold colour, this is not due to heat, as it does not change with changing variables of cut depth,...
