Re: Hand grinding tool bits
This is an endless argument: Here's my bit. My first instruction on this was right after dropping out of college. I was aiming at an apprenticeship. Took machining course at the Vo-Tech. The first thing we did was learn to grind our own single point tool. Water quenching as we went. No mention of &q...

Re: Square jaws for round collets anyone attempt them?
jcfx, if I understand your question, you are trying to clamp over the edges where the card stock is. Move it 45 degrees! The card stock joints should be halfway BETWEEN the jaws. It's still fiddly, but it can work. Try trimming the card stock and wrapping the assembly with tape before trying to clam...

Re: Electronic Leadscrews?
Weston Bye has a great article on a "home made" threading device (electronic) that he worked up for his Sherline lathe. As far as I know, it was published in Digital machinist at Village Press. these are the same people with Home Shop Machinist. I got my copy in a book of his articles by V...

Re: Collet Clamping Nut driving me nuts!
Just some food for thought: The Myford M-2 collets are similar in that they have no eccentric. They use a tube and pin arrangement to compress the collet down so it can be inserted into the clamping ring (which threads onto the spindle nose). Maybe this ring had a similar arrangement. (???)

preventing oxidation during flame heat treating
I have read about using "soft soap" or "boric acid" and some soft wire wrap to prevent excess oxidation during flame hardening of tool steel. Can anyone help explain these techniques or refer me to a source of explanation of how to do these procedures?

Re: Reworking 9" SB tailstock KEY REMOVAL
No, I can't say I knew about drifts with concave faces, but I get the concept. (Don't mushroom a pin if you are trying to push it through!) Well, it is out now. Heat plus flat faced punch, held with vise grips (to prevent burns and/or flying punches). And lots of hammering. I suppose South Bend figu...

Re: Reworking 9" SB tailstock KEY REMOVAL
OK I've found the white metal. But this thing won't budge. I haven't tried pounding with heat yet, but that seems to be the next option.

Re: Reworking 9" SB tailstock KEY REMOVAL
I think the main reason for the angle of the key is because there is so much cast iron directly under the key. The "nose" on my tailstock casting is short, maybe 5/8. The key is back in the bore more like 1.00 inch. It would be very difficult to put it in perpendicular to the bore. I think...

Re: Reworking 9" SB tailstock KEY REMOVAL
I'm back. I found the whiter metal, and heated to red hot with acetylene, even inverted it hoping that it might fall out, but no luck. Nothing melted or dripped or even softened, as far as I can tell. I still want it out, but not destructively so! HELP, please.

Belt Grinder Plan Reviews wanted
I am looking for reviews of the Little Mach Shop "Belt Grinder Plans (#2717). I feel that they are expensive, but they may be worth it. Does anyone have any experience with these plans? Or would you recommend other plans. I am not going to buy one if I can build one. But I am not clueless eithe...

Thanks much! That adds up, as the same installation is used on the gear cover hinge pin. Babbit. Mine has been rebuilt with steel shims. Ugly, but functional.
