I've had good luck with "Titebond II" water resistant wood glue, doesn't have the "foaming" problem.

That sounds exactly like the Bagley that I recently purchased. The pop-off pressure is indeed adjusted by the top screw that you'll need to fashion a tool for (saw/grind a slot in a straight blade screwdriver of appropriate size).
