Re: Potting electrical coil in steel
The wire straightener wasn't that clever - I used a hand to guide the wire, but I can't see why the bearings couldn't move - the wire does a figure-of-W around the three bearings to take out any kinks, moving them closer increases tension as the copper has to go through tighter bends 20190407_174726...

Re: Potting electrical coil in steel
In case this helps... I wound a new secondary for a welding transformer to convert to a 9 kva isolating transformer for my RPC, 3D printed the bobbin and used 6" rotary table to turn it, electric drill on the worm shaft and a lash-up of bearings and washers to straighten/tension the wire (3mm, ...

Re: Show us your milling machine!
Wasn't too shabby Pat, £470 UK, plus about £150 to hire trailer and Hilux to tow it home - it had a couple of faults, one I've fixed (knee elevation screw had lost its keeper, quick fix) and one still to do (electrics need sorting out, main motor contactor seems to be stuck closed so it starts up wh...

Re: Show us your milling machine!
I suppose I ought to upload some pics of mine, who knows, someone might recognise it! mill on trailer front countryside slightly cropped.jpg I'm led to believe it's an Italian "Test 2U" from the early 60's, someone on PM had a later model with slightly different motor and electricals, more...

Re: Matching a Taper?
If you can mount the flywheel, e.g. on a faceplate or in a 4-jaw and get it running true, you can run a DTI mounted to the toolpost against the taper and adjust the topslide (compound) for no movement on the DTI - to get it on centre height adjust it up and down while in contact with the flywheel ta...

Re: Need help on my lathe electrical
Your post came while I was typing! That's the motor overload, the dial sets the motor's rated full-load current, yes there's a thermal element in it plus (usually) a magnetic element, the thermal averages out the running current and the magnetic measures the instantaneous current, if either goes abo...

Re: Need help on my lathe electrical
That uses the transformer to supply 24v ac for the contactor coils (via switches etc.). the transformer has a small white rectangular block attached that looks like a fuse holder, might be worth checking the fuse hasn't popped (disconnect supply first, the fuse is at 220!) - without the 24v control ...

I like the mill next to the lathe, mount a tailstock on the mill table for those longer-than-the lathe jobs!!

Re: Liability
A million in liability insurance isn't so bad, place I used to work had to get 100 million liability cover for my company car - I had to use it airside at Heathrow Airport, at night, I could have run into a 747 full of passengers...
