Flange bearings instead of axle boxes

Does anyone have experience using flanged bearings for locomotive axles instead of conventional axle boxes? I thought I saw a Tinkerbell in the UK use flange bearings? If one could keep the axles parallel and pin the flanges to jeep them from moving it might work? Save a little bit of time I think. ...
