Welcome to the forum! I don't think I would cut the column off at all, because as soon as you do, you'll want to mill something that's too tall to fit and you'll be stuck. Better to do what you're doing already and somehow raise the workpiece as necessary. Or if you're really ambitious (and it looks...

Thanks for that, Rich. As I said, I'm ignorant of such things. I've used a cutting torch maybe twice ever, and I've never even seen a plasma cutter in operation.
