Re: not how they teach you to do it in school

Better than a spiral point (gun tap), is a spiral flute tap. Some 55 years of experience makes me disagree. As Harold noted, spiral flute taps are relatively fragile, mostly due to their small cross-section. I'd rather spend a bit of extra time clearing chips from a blind hole that was tapped with ...

Re: Anyone Familiar with Grace Brand Picks and Hooks?

I like my Snap-On picks but they were bought 20 years ago so buy new and YMMV.
I have a nice set of Teng Tools picks in a boxed set bought last year which also seem very good.

You can sharpen a tap by, with skill and judgement, relieving the leading edge with a diamond file or hone, once you have it down pat you can use a diamond tipped tool in a Dremel-like tool to get back to a sharp edge.

They're primarily a tool to protect manufacturers from the stupidity of the users of their products.

Few mills would be orthographicaly square to high limits and how well or accurately you want to do this would define the exact methods.
That means that milling small square parts just became a lot more complex ;-)

Re: Grinding wheel hole enlargement ?

So dressing the OD with a diamond will cause the wheel to explode as well? Of course not, but you can't argue with Elves (Elfin Safety), they also insist that tool racks behind lathes are dangerous, without understanding that the danger there is created by someone stupid enough to reach past rotati...

Re: Scale weight

I didn't mention Coefficients as I'm aware that they are physical constants but frictional force between materials is affected by contact area as well as weight, I wondered if it scaled making scale weight adequate for scale traction in a scale engine, the answer is yes or no though, indicating you ...

Re: Scale weight

Do friction and traction scale down with size and weight?
Is weight greater than scale required for models to generate optimum traction?

I think, like my Shaper, the shaper forum may be up a dusty corner of the garage with some of it's internals stacked on the table ready for reassembly ;-)

Thanks! I didn't think about a corner radius bit. Way to go. On the other hand, that bit costs $91, so no go.
Router bits work well on Aluminium
