Jim B
JIM,
Thanks for a very clear and simple description of both the processes, - better than I could have managed ! :)

Re: Entry Level Casting.

GUYS, I would also have been in the position of not having heard of this, ie. if I hadn't been given the job of making patterns and coreboxes for this process during one part of my life (probably only for about one and a half years). I did make the coreboxes, (which were quite complicated in themsel...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

We have certainly got off the subject of 'entry level casting' using simple oilsand type moulding, but it's been very interesting nonetheless. Probably most of what can be said about simple casting has been said and the rest is probably up to me to put it into practice (which I have been trying to d...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

In 1996, I was given the go-ahead to clean out that foundry, so for $1500, I got everything. The Shell Molding machine was scheduled to be sold to a scrapper, and rather than see that happen, I paid $300, for the machine and about 3000 pounds of resin treated sand. So ~ 28 years later that machine ...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

It just was not named shell mold, to my knowledge. The Wiki defination is off a bit too, sounding like a blind man trying to describe a swamp. Liked the description of the Wiki! - yes they can be like that, but it was just the first (of many) descriptions of the process I came across. Anyway,...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

At some point these two halves must be married, otherwise you have no mold. If the shell is made as one piece, the pattern can not be withdrawn. Something is not being reported. The process sounds to me more like a core making affair, not a mold, but I'm open to further instruction and explanation,...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

As I know it, Shell molding is a wax process where the wax mandrel with the needed parts are in a tree, is dipped in a ciramic slurry, and then an air fluidized sand box to coat the slurry goop, and the dipping process is repeated as often as needed to build up a shell. This shell is then hung upsi...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

At risk of being in the shooting gallery here, I have to say this: In casting speak, you have to understand that the names of 'Shell mold' and 'lost Wax investment', or simply 'investment casting', denote completely diferent processes, so the names have a meaning in themselves. STEAMIN, You are not...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

I wont tell you to forget shell molding, but it is a bit more complicated than natural green sand or Oil sands for molding on pattern boards. Flasks built of wood, and bolts for pins are easy to make, so you see, you can create your own fairly well. I have professional steel flasks, and equipment, ...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

I like to say 'the devil is in the details', and it is. Building an operational home foundry is understanding what you need, and dont need. I wish you the best, on your quest. D. Dave, The holidays are more or less over now and on Monday, everyone will be back at work, but I have been checking the ...

Slow down, get some books and read! There is a search engine here and you can find many conversations, that will help. I cannot give you 30yrs of experience in some small notes here, and make you successful. Dave, Yes, you'e right, I'll take your advice, I've exhausted my store of questions right n...

Re: Entry Level Casting.

For our casting purposes with Al-U-Min-E-uhm ( ) we need fluidity to capture details of the mold, and reasonable strength without flaws. Silicon is lost to oxidation, and must often be replaced to promote fluidity for the desired detail capture. Dave, Although I have welded aluminium in t...
