Re: No More Tanks Of Welding Gas Needed (This Is Too Cool)

Dave, I apologize if I seemed spiteful, nor did I mean to seem to cast aspersions on all participants here. That was not my intention. Instead, my intent was to guide you and others who read what you wrote away from a danger I thought you did not seem to appreciate. I *did* mean to be very emphatic,...

Re: No More Tanks Of Welding Gas Needed (This Is Too Cool)

My transfers of 02 to a pony bottle are no more dangerous than the fill at the gas house. It consists of a simple hose and bottle connections rated for pressure and service. The only danger then is the heat of re-compression, that newbies destroy regulators with by wheeling open a fresh (and high p...

Re: DIY high pressure air compressor (3000PSI and more)

Hi John, Thanks for replying and the PDF. I'm aware of the potential dangers of making one myself. And I know that making stuff yourself comes with danger etc. The same can be said about making a propane forge, melting aluminium, annodizing, etc. But that are the things that I love to do. I bought ...

Re: DIY high pressure air compressor (3000PSI and more)

Normally, HP (breathing air, paintball) compressors are 3- or 4-stage compressors with high-pressure (500 PSI and up) oiling systems for the final stage, using special (usually synthetic these days) oils with very high flashpoints. They are dynamically balanced with the stage pressures taken into ac...

Re: No More Tanks Of Welding Gas Needed (This Is Too Cool)

Uh, actually my past buddy used an AC recovery pump to charge LP bottles with natural gas, and used it on his field torches on the farm, a mini set. (Victor). He also got me to make a transfer line to suck down a small bottle of oxygen from an F , now B bottle for portable work. And you can top it ...

Re: Safe use of a slitting saw.

I just forged ahead and started to slit things, using what I thought was an appropriate SFPM and a feed that sounded OK, with plenty of brushed-on cutting oil (steel) or WD-40 (Aluminum). When things didn't sound as though I was getting a clean cut, as in 1018, I backed out and re-ran the already-sl...

Re: Dividing Plate Sizes

<snip> I used to do all of the calculations by hand. It helps keep one's math skills sharp. I now use a small calculator. Faster, and less likely to yield an error. I'm getting old and goofy. Harold I got a printing calculator for the shop because it was the only one without an auto-shutoff I could...

Re: Rust in clyinders

No matter what the OP winds up doing, I have to say that Big Dave's posts in this thread are among the best-written and cogent explanations about how you need to *think* about engine rebuilding I have ever seen, anywhere. Maybe even the best. I have no experience with steam, nor with any infernal co...

Re: South Bend Lathe Milling attachment - any use??

I got one of these attachments with a nice Logan 200. I don't recall who made it. For small pieces and light cuts it works great. Having the ability to mill at all beats the snot out of not being able to mill. But of course it's been on the shelf under that lathe since I got the mill...

I'd like to think you wear them just for clean-up---never when operating machinery.

Oh, my; I should have written 5 mil gloves, not 5mm gloves! If these catch on anything they just tear away, usually with so small a tug that I don't even notice at the time.
