Re: Annoying Movie Welding

Back to welding... I just watched last night's Penn and Teller's Fool Us . There was one magician who did an escape from a police car that was welded shut. They used an engine driven Lincoln arc welder. But before using that they lit the O/A torch with a substantial flame. Then they made a single sm...

Thanks for the follow-up. Makes good sense.

Re: B-17 flying overhead all weekend!

I hitched a ride in the Collngwooods foundation B17 last year. If you can ever afford it, I highly recommend it. This is the view from the bombardier's seat a few thousand feet above Concord Calif. http://i.imgur.com/fiKX1Q6m.jpg And then there is me after the 80 MPH blow dry (engines running while ...

Re: Back gouge welding

Nope. A good weld should not appear any different. That's why an acid etch is used to show the penetration when testing welds. The etching brings out the grain.

Re: Totally new to welding. Simple questions

The stick out should be about 3/8 inches. While that is not a great welder, it will do OK under the right conditions. I made a 1/4 inch thick 4x6 plate out two 2x6 bars by following the same procedures that you use with a larger mig. I did it just to see if I could. I V'd the edges and use the appro...

Re: Welds Getting Less Bulgy

It really helps to understand the terms. Wetting is where the toes (edges of the weld) blend in with the base metal. Poor wetting looks sort of like the way a drop of water looks on a greased pan. It should look like a drop of soapy water on a clean plate. Poor wetting is caused by many things inclu...

Glad to hear that you have mastered the process. The bad news is that you will miss all the thrill of trial and error fitting.

Re: Spare keys don't work

Locksmiths commonly will create keys using just a file. Not because it's fastest or most precise, but because there's a process where you can make a new key for a lock just by observing the marks that he lock leaves on the key. The technique is known as impressioning and is a popular way to create a...

Re: Minimum recommended SFM for carbide inserts

Given stainless steel (nothing exotic) on a lathe what is the minimum recommended "speed" (SFM) for carbide inserts. Certainly, carbide can be used at slow speeds, but what is considered the optimum SFM range? I have threaded using carbide inserts while turning the chuck by hand. That's S...

Re: Spare keys don't work

Now that I've been reminded, I want to check out the "cnc" self service machine at the hardware store. If it's well designed it will touch off the original and blank to ensure alignment. If it's just dead reckoning, then it's no better than the teenager with the older machines.

Re: Spare keys don't work

I forgot to mention the other alternative; All major lock providers publish the specs for the keys. They also provide a "code" with each key / lock. Many keys actually have that code stamped into the bow of the key. If you give that code to a locksmith, then he/she will be able to recreate...

Re: Spare keys don't work

Key duplicating machines work pretty much like a miniature horizontal mill with a tracer attachment. They have a milling wheel (aka a cutter) on an arbor and the key blank is moved across the face of the cutter while the blank is mounted to a sliding carrier. Both of my key duplicators use a HSS mil...
