Re: Why are these springs necessary
Strasburg has spring switches in multiple locations along the line and see many operations everyday.

Re: How to get started?
I will echo most of the comments about time and potential burnout as well as staying involved in a club and even building something else to play with while you work on the "big one". I built an Allen 10-wheeler as well. It took me almost 15 years because of kids, job, wife, life and other ...

Lead truck dimensions for swing and possible existing design
I am working on designing an N&W J in 7.5" gauge. I am looking for a lead truck design that offers enough swing and support under the cylinders. The plan is to not follow N&W design as that is more accurate than I want to machine and model. I believe that a standard swing link and bolst...

Re: Boiler tube length question
Yes Marty. Girders is maybe a better term. They are in my 10-wheeler and have "slots" milled along the bottom (welded) edge to allow circulation. I have done a bit more research and seen fireboxes with the same length or longer than I am proposing with no issues. This has been a good conve...

Re: Boiler tube length question
Thanks Scott. Will take that into consideration. Better to be safe than sorry. My 10-wheeler has stock height crown sheet but if the sight glass is full, it will carry over some water. I usually need a bath but there are better ways! Spool valves might be a bit less forgiving with that much water! T...

Re: Curious about a few live steam locomotives
Speaking of locating locomotives from the past, does anyone know what happened to the 10-Wheeler built by Dan or Paul Kulp from PA? It was the first live steam sized loco I was exposed to. Thats my great uncle Spence Stoughton at the throttle and I am sitting in the lap of the lady with the red slee...

Re: Boiler tube length question
Thanks for the input. Good info here. I will try to answer a couple of questions: - Boiler and smokebox will be 12" OD jacketed. 10" pipe will be easier to find and since both smokebox and boiler get a jacket, it will make an easy transition. - N&W J is the prototype - I was planning o...

Boiler tube length question
I am in the process of designing my second boiler and am interested in thoughts on tube length. It will be a steel shell & firebox with copper tubes. This is for a northern and "scaling" the full size, it makes the tubes 43 1/2" long. I plan to roll in 20ea type K 3/4 pipe. 7/8&qu...

Re: ASME BPVC Section I Power Boilers
All of the state inspectors I have worked with here in Georgia have been excellent. as long as we have all our ducks in a row and they observe the hydro, they can do their inspections and then want to see the trains run! They do their job but also acknowledge that we are sitting on top of these thin...
