Re: Simple, heavy duty, truck design for ballast cars

Excellent! Thank you Bill! This is essentially what I am looking for so I can haul a yard in each car. Thank you, Jeff Smith Florida See if you can find some spherical bearings as are used on rod ends. These permit the inner race to tilt with respect to the outer race. These bearings would be a clo...

Re: 3/4” - 1” Van Brocklin Duplex Steam pumps for sale

They look nice but they are NOT duplex pumps! In fact they are two simplex pumps working alternately; one completes its stroke before the other begins its pumping stroke. There is no overlap in the pumping stroke. True duplex pumps have levers and lost motion incorporated such that the pumping strok...

Re: I may have found my problem...

The published cutting speeds are based on rigid set-ups and sharp cutting tools. Further, these published cutting speeds provide a cutting tool life of one hour for HSS. For the home shop machinist slower cutting speeds are advisable because increased tool life is a definite plus and home machinery ...

Re: steam line insulation ideas?

Rich wrote: "...and if you are trying to reduce condensation, you may be adding to it...". Interesting observation, that. Many moons ago in Heat Transfer class we carried out such calculations to optimize insulation thickness on piping. Turned out that with small piping, adding any insulat...

Re: Derailments

Go to youtube and look for H-tains in Dortmund and Duesseldorf Germany. Wuppertal is the granddaddy of them all. In my neck-of-the-woods the powers-that-be are spending $2 Billion on a new transit system using a rail system that was torn up 70 years ago. During the construction, which is still not c...

Re: WTB a 3-4 in duplex boiler pump

^^^ would love to see pics of your CPR Hudson. Go to my YouTube channel BasementEngineer, or just google it with the given name. You need to poke around a little because my son uses the same channel. You will find ol' #2888 running at the track in Hamilton, Ontario, and at Les Cedres, Quebec. Enjoy...

Re: $83 !?!?!?!?

Last time I used my town's transfer site oh, maybe 8 years ago, the minimum charge was CDN$ 10.

And I objected to that strenuously.

Now I take things apart and break it up if necessary, and put it in the picked-up garbage.

Re: Broken Taps

Years back when I had no kids and a lot more free time I thought a flat rate tap removal business would be a cool model. Idea being that the customer ships you part and a return label you burn it out with an EDM tap burner and ship back for a fee. It seemed like quite the little niche side gig. Is ...

Re: 5c or er40 collets?

I’m already using 5c in some of my fixtures for the mill. But I’m looking at the er collets for quicker setup. Time is money and I’m constantly taking time to screw in a new collet with my r8 spindle and my 4 jaw in the lathe. Thought maybe the collets would speed things up a bit? Would changing to...

Re: Peltier Chips as an electrical source?

Are we talking about steam locomotives here??? How about a tried and proven steam turbo-generator? In scale size, no less, even for 3/4" scale aficionados. Imagine that, just like the prototypes. A well designed and executed 1 1/2" scale size turbo-generator would even keep your cell phone...
