Re: smoke coming out of 9729 lathe motor connector box

Well the 8/25 shipment was not received by Grizzly and they're saying the next shipment will arrive on 10/12. I've found a C32000-1 motor at Detroit Machine Tools who are the vendor for Smithy products. They've sent me pictures and mounting measurements for that motor, which is for their Midas machi...

Re: replacing lathe bearings on 9729

I just ordered both bearings and gaskets and the total with regular shipping and tax was $106.08. The fact that these were in current stock tells me I am not the first to be putting new ones in. This machine is 12-18 years old on my watch and dk how many more before I bought it from a commercial con...

Re: replacing lathe bearings on 9729

OK I called Grizzly tech support and he said to put the same preload that you would put on a car's front wheel bearings; when you start to feel a slight resistance stop. There are spanner nuts on the rear of the shaft that are used to apply the preload. These are clearly shown on the schematic in th...

Re: replacing lathe bearings on 9729

I just looked at the manual again and didn't see any mention of bearing preload.

Re: replacing lathe bearings on 9729

Torch the online Grizzly parts list shows the bearings to be p9729227 $38.50 and p9729250 $39, I have the manual that came with my machine and don't recall any instructions re bearing preload but will look again perhaps I missed it. Do you know if I will need to buy anything other than the two beari...

replacing lathe bearings on 9729

Has anyone done this? Any tips? I read somewhere (I think?) that someone found some sealed bearings that fit instead of buying replacement bearings from Grizzly. If this is so does anyone know the brand and part # of those bearings?

Re: smoke coming out of 9729 lathe motor connector box

20190420_160424.jpg Guys I've already ordered and paid for the Grizzly replacement. It's on back order and according to Grizzly the next batch will arrive on 8/25. This thing (the 3 in 1) is a tool to me and not a hobby in itself. Thus I'm into the most simple/easiest fix and not some exotic do ove...

Re: smoke coming out of 9729 lathe motor connector box

I looked again just now and the smoke is coming out of the electric motor case where the wires pass through into the connector box. I'm going to order a new motor from grizzly.

Re: 9729 control knobs

I've decided to make some new knobs out of some scrap aluminum rod I have. I'll share what I do after I've done it.

smoke coming out of 9729 lathe motor connector box

I've done quite a bit of lathe work the last week and just now I noticed smoke coming out of the connector box on the lathe motor. I took the cover off of the box and could see no evidence of fire or blackened wires or anything like that, so put the box back on the tried the motor again. Same thing;...

Re: 9729 control knobs

I've looked on McMaster-Carr, MSC, pretty much everywhere. You guys aren't helping if you don't have a source (which was my question) please let someone else weigh in.
