Re: Are Engineers the Most Obnoxious People in the Universe?
Well, there's engineers and then there's 'engineers'! In the US, civil engineers are the worst because they think they can do anything but are incompetent at virtually all engineering functions because they ain't never had to actually build any of the funky stuff they design. They are tied for 'wors...

Re: Shop made tap
That is the question. Which came first, the flutes or the threads? And why?

Re: Desperate help needed
Here in US, Nick's device is called a "crotch center", almost everybody has one, almost no one ever uses them.

Re: Threading
All good suggestions. Myself, I cheat. Cutting thread and finishing it are two operations. When done cutting, run a file lightly over the outside of the threads, run a 3sided file through them, polish with some fine emory cloth, lapping compound, or even a 3 sided stone if you've got one. At least y...

Re: Question about setup break-in of machines, must have too
Agree on hss v carbide, I've learned the hard way. I'm now back to grinding hss, experiment over. You mentioned a 'pile' of grinders, so just to be sure, you'll need a bench grinder or bench mounted belt grinder. Hand held grinders really aren't suitable for hss grinding.

Re: Why People Prefer Imperial to Metric
thousandths of an inch is the perfect increment for machine work. Metric can do the same just as well, but looks funny to get the same dimension.

Re: Is this a fair price for a SB Heavy 10?
Just curious, where is it? Be specific, include address and phone # of the guy. Just curious, that's all, trust me. Seriously, the things wrong can be fixed/replaced, but ways in good shape are hard to come by. That machine has a clutch to prevent real damage from a crash. Due diligence on gears etc...

Re: Inside Gear Teeth
Set up for indexing on the Logan, gear in chuck, tool ground to tooth shape in compound, use lathe like a shaper. Would take about a week to cut one tooth, but, if that's the tool you got.... I've never done it myself, but you're looking for ideas, right? Seems like it would be do-able, similar to t...

Re: Tramming..what am I doing wrong?
Well, what's suggested for tramming a mill that doesn't have front to back adjustment? I can tram left/right on my millrite, but that's it, no front/back tramming possible.

What they all said. And consider trimming left/right, then shim under vise instead of under table for front/back.

Re: Fitting Bison Chuck to Logan 12"
You need to adjust the set tru every time you chuck up different size stock and also every time you remove/reinstall the chuck. I bought a bison set tru for a 1&1/2"-8 spindle and was told no machining of the backplate was needed, it is, after all adjustable.
