What is cracked? The cylinder? The throttle? Clarity please.

The OP may correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he meant to write "cranked". As in "spun" or "turned over".

Re: 1 1/2 HP FBM

Not sure if you saw my last edit, but some additional pictures would be helpful. From the pictures you've posted, the location of the carb relative to the intake valve is interesting. Can you zoom out a bit and post a picture showing the entire head and carb.

Re: 1 1/2 HP FBM

If it doesn't leak when it's just sitting there with fuel in the tank and you're not cranking it, that suggests that the carb needle & seat are OK and the float is not stuck in the "open" position. It leaks when you start cranking. You've clarified that there's no fuel pump, so it can'...

Re: 1 1/2 HP FBM

I agree with Bob D., the engine should be runnable with that carburetor. I don't have experience with that specific engine, but over the years I've seen old engines that were fitted with modern carburetors. We once had an Associated Hired Man (2.25 HP, as I recall) that had been fitted with an updra...

My understanding is that 2 are known to exist, and there are rumors of a third.
In addition to the rarity, what makes this engine unusual (and valuable) is its design. The piston is stationary, and the cylinder reciprocates.

Re: Sorg reciprocating cylinder engine on auction

I've been watching that auction as well. I wonder if it will stay in this part of the country. I would love to see it running at a show one day. It is a very unusual design to say the least.

Re: Need help with a rockwell 21-100

I read somewhere that the head weighs about 150 pounds with the motor. I've yet to remove mine, but when I do I think I'll get some help or use a hoist. When I was younger I might have attempted to do it by myself, but there's no way I could handle that much weight at that height now. If you decide ...

Rockwell 21-100 Spindle Lubrication

How is the spindle lubricated on this mill? There are two ball oilers (one on each side - see attached picture), but I suspect these are just for the quill. If that's correct, then how does one lubricate the spindle bearings?
Thanks,
John

Horizontal Mill Spindle Direction?

I hope you'll all forgive me for this stupid newbie question. I'm ready to wire up the horizontal spindle motor on my Rockwell mill, and I'm wondering which direction is considered the "forward" direction for the spindle. Clockwise, or counter-clockwise as viewed from the table side of the...
