Re: Pre-heating boiler water

Thermal shock is a type of rapidly transient mechanical load. By definition, it is a mechanical load caused by a rapid change of temperature of a certain point. It can be also extended to the case of a thermal gradient, which makes different parts of an object expand by different amounts. I do not i...

Re: Pre-heating boiler water

Thermal shock occurs when cold water enters a hot boiler. ... The difference in water temperature causes the rapid expansion and contraction of equipment inside the boiler, including its tubes, tube sheets, valves, fittings, and piping. I wanted to build an engine that had no dummy appliances. The S...

Re: Pre-heating boiler water

Tom, I chuckle at all the advice from each of us on this topic. Every one of us made good points to the subject of water Pre-heating. I had a good friend once tell me, "KISS"!! He meant, "KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID". I did not listen to him though. When a new gadget came out for the live steamer, I was f...

Re: Pre-heating boiler water

While temperature shock may not seem a problem on a small boiler, what is small? The money invested in the boiler on my engine was significant. There is lots of jewelry attached to that boiler. To replace that boiler would be a major expense and challenge..... So, I am a firm believer in preheat and...

Re: Pre-heating boiler water

I added a feedwater heater to my locomotive because it was prototypical. the benefit was secondary. It has been on the engine for 30 years with no problems of leaks. It does have a drain on the bottom of the tank to dry it out after a days running. Does it work? The harder the locomotive works the h...

The feedwater heater mounted to the smokebox on my engine adds a tremendous amount of heat to the water prior to entering the boiler. It also reduces the "shock" to the boiler of adding cold water.

Re: The handrail conundrum

013 (4).JPG 011 (4).JPG 009 (2).JPG 004 (11).JPG Luck was on my side when I installed the handrails on my 1401. I made my handrail in 2 pieces. There was a straight piece of handrail that ran along the boiler. This was strait forward to do. I mounted the stanchions to the boiler and fed the straigh...

Re: Southern Railways Ps-4 construction info

Thank You for the compliment. I have a fantastic wife who lets me keep it in the dining room on display. Her only rule is that I clean it of the grime after a weekend running of it. I will spend 2 hours of cleaning it for every hour I run it. It makes for great conversations when folks come over to ...

Re: Southern Railways Ps-4 construction info

025.JPG That is a great question about the injectors. No, I do not run the injectors through the feed water heater. When I built the locomotive, I intended for nothing to be dummy. I want a working feedwater pump to supply water through thru the feedwater heater and then into the boiler. I use the ...

Re: Southern Railways Ps-4 construction info

My passion over the many years has been to have a close representation of the Southern Ps4. The first thing I did was to get the prints and visit the Smithsonian Museum of American history. Wow, it has been a long journey. It was 10 years before I pulled my first train on a club track. I did make so...

Re: Butterfly fire door, castings by David Moore

Hello Fred, the Clippard Minimatics makes the valve and it is small and more to scale. It is about 5/8" x 1/2" . If you go online to the company Clippard Minimatics and put in MAV-3 in their search engine the valve will pop up and you can look at it. The valve is a 3 way valve to drain off the steam...
