Another Dynamo Thread

I'm working on rebuilding a roughly 3" scale dynamo. I've read many of the threads that have come up on chaski prior, but I thought I'd start a new one, since I'm starting with an already working turbine, and mostly want to configure a new generating end. The old generator end was an ancient ca...

Re: Stuart Steam Boiler Feed Pump (SBFP) - Stuart gasket material "Copperite" and "Oakenstrong"

I have not heard of "Copperite", but annealed copper is a common gasket material, particularly on full sized locomotive domes, slide valve lids, etc. Using a torch or tig setup, we would roll a 3/16" copper wire to the proper diameter and weld the ends together. Then carefully file th...

If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. Looks good!

Re: 4-new cylinder drain cocks, maker unknown

These look like and have the exact same sized threads as those offered by Mike Venezia's "The Backshop". I'd bet money that they are. A new set is over $150, so these will be a very nice deal for someone.

Re: Lettering on engine

Yes, it's entirely dependent on what locomotive, what railroad, and what year. Everyone did it differently.

Unfortunately can't provide much of an answer without any more information.

Re: Boiler welding advice.

It's looking really good! I agree with Glenn. You really should consult with your certified welder on appropriate joint preparation. The only potential issue I see is in the last photo, where the wrapper is going into the boiler barrel: WELDING BOILER 21.jpeg Are those square corners in the weld joi...

Re: Seen this Locomotive on Ebay Today

From the original Ebay listing in this thread: VINTAGE LARGE LIVE STEAM ENGINE LOCOMOTIVE TRAIN PROJECT FOR PARTS OR REPAIR MUST SEE! I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE TRAIN OTHER THAN WHAT I WAS TOLD. FROM WHAT I COULD FIND OUT ONLINE I BELIEVE IT'S CALLED A LIVE STEAM ENGINE. This came from an estate sa...

Try also looking for "Huron Washout Plugs", another name for this type.

Re: Boiler welding advice.

Yes, wire-feed processes are allowable in "code" boiler and vessel construction, but only certain ones that have been throughly tested and approved. The same goes for all welding processes. Dual-shield Flux-core and sub-arc I have seen and used personally in code work. Tristan is right, mo...

Allen Model Website Back Online!

Same web address as before https://allenmodels.com/ Steve has indicated that this month especially has been very light. The website being down has not helped, I'm sure. As hard as it is to think that a mainstay like Allen won't be around forever- in these times it seems like a possibility. If you ne...

Re: Boiler welding advice.

It sounds like you are on the right track. A good welder will be able to lay a full-penetration root weld on nearly every joint in a boiler, eliminating the need to back weld any IF said is good at what they do, and have the proper fit-up, gap, material prep, etc. I speak for most welders when I say...
