Re: The home shop machinist, health of the hobby
My lathe has 4G WiFi connection to my iPhone. I'm so happy. I'm an Old Guy RN My lathe has a bluetooth-connected TouchDRO system, displayed wirelessly on an Android tablet; not to mention w/ 1 micron glass scales. I'm a happy guy and an old one too! No, seriously joking aside. I really do have the ...

Re: 7" schedule 40 tube
7" schedule 40 pipe isn't made . Schedule 40 6" pipe has a 6 5/8" OD. For an exact 7" you will have to go to some type of tubing. YES IT IS. So is 9". So is 11". It's used for oil well casing. I bought some 7" sched 40 A106B about 3 years ago. Not easy to find but...

Re: Thieves caught on video stealing mini steam train in West Seattle
I'm having trouble understanding how they manhandle (with one of the thieves being a smaller person!) the 1300 lb. engine @ 00:45 in the video. Although the newscaster said "1300 lbs" -- even so, in the video it appears as though the thieves are not having too hard a time manhandling it, f...

Re: Free 2D CAD Software?
Fusion 360 is very hard to beat. Very powerful. If in addition, you are 3D printing or CNC machining, I don't think there is anything better out there (for free at least) Although personally I can't see why anyone would want just only 2D, instead of 3D parametric modeling in this day and age. Most p...

..... since the navy won't teach me to be an actual machinist mate.... Probably should have picked a rating like Machinery Repairman rather than Machinist Mate. Machinists Mate by definition does things like "....operate, maintain, and repair (organizational and intermediate level) ship propul...

...... I sweep chips 3 times a day on a full machining day; ..... My OCD, I try to vacuum at each machining operation! Not always, but a lot of the time. With the CNC mill, I try and vacuum while the machine is cutting !!! I know it sounds eccentric. Also I never blow chips off with an air gun, I a...

Re: Using a steam indicator
Tubing that completely full of liquid right up into the transducer will transmit pressure changes very accurately and quickly. Trouble comes when there are bubbles in the tubing. Then all the fluid up to the location of the bubble has to move as the bubble expands and compresses with pressure chang...

Re: Final Bore is under spec
...One hits size by chance if the exact measurement isn't known. That's why I asked how the dial bore was set. It may provide repeatable readings, but they may or may not be the actual size if not set by a ring. I've been embarrassed by that issue more than once in my life. H Harold, What about set...

FWIW Aside from the hardware aspects to the digital steam indicator (pressure transducer, crank position encoder, Digital Analog Converter, assorted data acquisition & signal processing gear) -- I forget now some of the hardware stuff I had worked out -- I would think that you can solve for the ...

I'm not as old as some of you guys, but in the late 60's we had classes available like welding and small engine repair beginning in the 7th & 8th grade . I know, because I took them starting in the eighth grade. Admittedly it was a rural Middle school where such things were deemed necessary by t...
