Re: gradual crankshaft
While you COULD thin down the non-PTO end crank journals, they generally aren't for two reasons. One, interchangability (although this reason is going out of favor with cracked rods and "painted" bearings with .0001" clearances, it still sort of stands true) If you made an inline 4 cy...

Re: green sand casting newbie questions
I use talcum powder in an old tube sock. Once the bottom half of the mold is rammed, you install the top half of the pattern and coat the entire thing in talc. It separates super easy.

Re: Portable Boring Head
This boring bar has the cam lock down method for mounting down to an adjacent cylinder as well. Granted NOTHING on the scale you'd be talking to bore out a steam cylinder or marine engine but certainly big enough for almost any automobile engine.

Re: Portable Boring Head
I've looked on Goodson and Beam's websites for info on the Storm's but found nothing. I haven't called anyone about it. The Kwik-way bars look and operate under similar principles as the Storm. All of my gearing is internal (no belt drive swinging around out there). The really lacking part is mic de...

Re: Newbie Furnace build
I tell you what I used in the beginning, a propane powered furnace built using a mixture of materials available at the hardware store. I used 4 parts perlite and 1 part furnace cement (by weight) with a splash of water to thin it. Smear it around the inside of a steel container big enough to This mi...

Re: Kaowool harmed by flame
If you haven't already found your solution, what you are looking for is called "rigidizer". I've heard the types ITC100 and ITC200. It's apparently a brush on/spray on material for coating the kaowool. You really need it around the tangent where the flame is directly impinging.

Re: Portable Boring Head
I have two rigid hones for finish work. A Lisle 15000 for larger diameters and a Ammco 4950 for the smaller diameters. Both are "portable" models, I use them with a 1/2" drill. The cylinder's are bolted down to a work plate I stick in my bench vise. One of these days I may make a tank...

Re: Portable Boring Head
I'm sorry about the quality of the pics. They were taken quickly with my old LG cellurized telephone. Blow them up and they're not so clear. They do get the point across though, the tool bit holder I was given had 7°-8° of rake putting a lot of upward pressure on the column. When the bit would hit a...

Re: 3 in 1
I have a Smithy Granite Max 1340 in a small (read: small engines AND small shop) engine machine shop doing mostly ATV and lawnmower work. I would agree with the assertion that the lathe functions are ok but the mill and drill functions are, lackluster. That is coming from someone who has used proper...

Thanks, long time lurker. Here's the monster, excuse the mess: http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu217/sicivicdude/Boring%20bar/cea476a3-4a07-4247-b716-7f5cc674f430_zpslmvgxphl.jpg The tool bit holder I was given with the machine is on the left and (spoiler!) the new one is one the right. http://i6...

Re: Portable Boring Head
I know this is an old thread but I happen to have one of these wonderful machines. I got it from a co-worker who used it to punch out Harley cylinders. He gave me the torque plate when I picked it up. I bought it to use it on ATV/lawnmower engines (specifically, sleeving) but the first time I went t...
