Re: Free 2D CAD Software?

I have been using Linux since I retired, so I am always on the look out for functioning open source software. I recently discovered QCAD. It is free and works very similar to my recollections of Autocad for DOS circa 1990. Their website https://qcad.org/en/ says it will work with Mac and Windows as...

Re: shipping engines

When Marty Knox shipped a boiler to me earlier this year, I also used Freightquote.com. The price and service were excellent, but the crate was not on a skid. Sure enough someone punched a hole through the crate with a fork. Fortunately, it missed hitting the boiler by an inch or so. Mounting a crat...

Re: Question about coal

The Pocahontas coal from WV sold in upstate NY is sold as "Blacksmithing coal." One load a few years ago was too big and I had to whack it all with a hammer on a steel plate and then screen it. Still great coal!

New bridge open at FLLS

If you are coming to the Finger Lakes Live Steamers 50th Anniversary in a couple of weeks, the new 7-1/4 inch bridge is now open! I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it rides. Since the brakes are not quite functional yet on my new Shay, I was a little apprehensive about the down grade, but I act...

FLLS 50th Celebration

The deadline to register for the Finger Lakes Live Steamers 50th Anniversary is June 30, 2019. We already have 165 people registered and many are bringing engines and cars in all three gauges. The new bridge on the 7-1/4 track is almost finished and we expect it to be operational before August. All ...

I wonder if they're doing something like the car theft rings, shipping stolen stuff out of the country.
If it is 7-1/2" gauge, most other countries are 7-1/4." Good luck re-gauging it smaller...

Re: Railroad supply

Their Face Book page directs you to a new website they are working on: http://provalueinc.com/test/ That "test" page is working but the old site is "not found."

Re: Darkening / "bluing" brass?

If you can find the chemicals; "liver of sulphur" (potassium sulphide) in salt form mixed with water will produce a brown color. Dark black - 2 oz. liver of sulphur, 1/4 oz. aqua ammonia in 1 gallon of water. Bluish black - Barium sulphide in water. Reddish brown - copper sulphate and water. Antique...

Re: Pipe thread sealant?

Locktite 510 Flange sealant. I use it in place of gaskets and for the threads on small steam fittings.

FLLS in Live Steam magazine

The article I wrote on the history of the Finger Lakes Live Steamers has just been published in the new issue (March/April 2019) of Live Steam and Outdoor Railroading. They used 32 photos including the cover shot. Our 50th Anniversary Meet is this year - August 1 - 4. It is closed to the public. You...
