Re: Looking for suggestions for a respirator

I've been using a simple 3M respirator for a few years now. The filters are thin enough to fit under most hoods (not that wierd looking swedish made one though) and you have two options for filters 95 or 100. Opt for the 100. (Its the pink one, but dont be a putz about fashion, it'll save your life ...

Re: the newbie says Hi and a question.

Update: was working at the old shop this week and really went over the 3-1. Yes, it was not leveled, though the reason was not so obvious. I have it mounted on a heavy welded stand for moving it about while in its current location. Well, the bearings in one of the casters had gone kaput at some poin...

Re: Welding, eyes and sight

Heinlein quote time. PhD. Piled higher and Deeper. In one of the production shops I worked, we had a guy who refused to use a hood or any other PPE. He'd just close his eyes for long fillets and call it good. His welds were good, amazingly. After 8 months, he had to quit because the UV burns on his ...

Re: Welding on apickup frame

Having welded custom exhaust for a few years, I can tell you with certainty, we never disconnected batteries or ECMs ever. And as for 'isolating the grounds' by disconnecting the battery, Hah! All you will do is force stray current into whatever is grounded to the frame instead of into that acid cov...

Re: the newbie says Hi and a question.

To John H: not adjustable. This is an older HF 5980 and the TS is bolted to a cast housing that is fitted to the ways. Very little adjustment possible and only by reaming bolt holes or other non-precise methods. Harold: I will agree that level, or lack of, is the likely culprit, but not overly conce...

Re: the newbie says Hi and a question.

Ok, little update for the question I posted. I set everything up today, and,,, no point in pursuing it, at least on this machine. The tailstock is seriously offcenter, to the tune of .010" rearward of center. I'm not going to waste stock at this stage, and this machine is just not worth the eff...

Re: the newbie says Hi and a question.

One of the reasons I am going this way is due to my Southbend being off line while I finish building the new shop. The Chinese 3-1 is just convenient and accessible, but not adjustable. :-( I'm not looking for repeatable here, just quick n dirty turning that will fill the bill for something else. Th...

the newbie says Hi and a question.

Hi all, been lurking here for awhile now and just now jumped in the water. Not a machinist by trade, more the Jack of all trades guy, and self taught on just about everything, though I am not so proud as to think I know it all: Ha, only fools think such. No, the more I learn, the more I realize I re...
