Good stuff Harold! This and your two other posts to which you referred us from Rec.Crafts.Iggy'sTrailer.OT.Metalworking (I may be done over there...) caused me to make a contribution to deforestation by printing them out for further perusal. You've motivated me to try free-hand tool bit creation. If...

Re: Yes, it's another Newbe post on What Mill to buy.

I am not that far removed from newbie-ism, so I can't make many recommendations regarding what mill to get (although I love my Gorton 8D). I can tell you that I didn't think I wanted auto feed, but after buying a mill with an X axis feed, I wouldn't want to go back to a mill without. Obviously, it's...

Re: How to "Tighten Down" Palmgren Rotary Table?

Hi, I don't have an answer but I do have the same question about MY Palmgren 8" rotary table. I took it apart and lubed it when I first got it. It came apart easily - I don't remember exactly how, but you won't have a problem. Since I'd gotten it, I'd only used it as an index table for drilling...

Tapmatic 1A questions

Hi,

I don't see the Tapmatic 1A listed as a current model on Tapmatic's website.
I'm assuming it's been supplanted. I have an opportunity to get one cheap.
Can anyone tell me how it compares to their current models and if collets
for the current models will fit?

Thanks,

Peter

Re: posible problem? Re: Electronic Edge Finder

The electronic edge finders aren't to be used with the spindle turning. The spindle should not be rotating. I'm not surprised that your friend had trouble using one with the machine on! Probably made the little bulb dizzy...

Re: Sleeving brake cylinders...

I'd like to sleeve my master cylinder to compensate for some different brake calipers I put on my car.

Do you know of a source for MC seals listed by size and type, not by application (although an apllication reference or cross reference would help)?

Spindle height recommendations

Hi all, I'm getting my new mill on Wednesday and I'm building a platform for it. It's a small Gorton knee mill that needs to be raised a bit and I'm wondering if there's some rule of thumb regarding the height of the spindle bottom. I'm thinking that about 60" is about right. I'm 6'1" and ...

Gorotn 8D info? Any owners?

Hi all, I've just bought a '42 Gorton 8D mill. It's a good size for my dinky garage and seems well taken care of. It's got an 8x24 table, 12 speed table power feed, and for a mill its size has a lot of X,Y and Z travel. It's a cool piece. The only significant downside is that it uses unique three si...

Re: Idea for making mill/drills more rigid

I'm interested in what you did but I confess I'm having a tough time sussing it out from your description, Any way you post a picture, drawing or fax me something showing where you were pushing, how you were measuring and what you did to fix it?

Re: engine turning on aluminum

I just spent part of my evening doing some engine turning on 6061 aluminum parts I'm making. I too used Cratex cylinders on arbors combined with WD40. They work better than everything else I've tried. I wanted to add that the results were improved if I polished the surface before hand. That way any ...

Idea for making mill/drills more rigid

Hi, This might be a stupid newbie idea... With all the discussion about the rigidity, or lack thereof, of mill/drills I was thinking about something as I was eyeing my RF20 last night. Has anyone thought to fill (or actualy filled) the inside of the hollow column and base with something like engine ...
