Re: Milling depth
If your goal was to clean a thread, I think the geometry of the tool is not optimal. Rather than cutting what looks like a slot (keyway) it should look more like a flute with no metal in front of the edge doing the cleaning. End mills prefer to cut on one side throwing off the chips rather than cut...

Re: Painting the lathe?
My friend spayed a coat of gray Sherwin Williams "machine" paint on my Boxford 25 years ago Holds up wonderfully Just know that all "Gloss' paints are much harder than "Satin" or "flat"paints because of additives ( or lack there of ) Paint Chemist told me that ......

Re: Enco 91000 mill bearings
A search for bearings by those numbers found 30208 and 4T-30308 which are both 40mm ID X 80MM OD X 19.75MM thick. Is it possible that those are your bearing numbers? It’s suspicious that they would be different brands so you’re probably right that someone has been in there in the past. Be sure to ge...

Re: New Knurling tool
Full props to a P.E. that can “do stuff.” So many P.E.s and engineering school graduates including a close relative have no mechanical skills. My engineer relative called me recently to tell me that he successfully changed the battery in his lawn mower. Before I retired I was surrounded by engineeri...

Re: Milling depth
A very late “Thank you!” It’s really been a great experience. We recently finished the 5” guns. They had to go back onto the ship while she was still in the dry dock. The 18,000 pound barrel assemblies had to be threaded through openings that are only a little taller than the fully assembled barrel ...

Thanks. It’s a real delight to use the controls as intended.

Re: ENC Variable Frequency Drive
After having to pause a few times to fix mechanical problems the VFD and lathe are working as desired. The switches on the spindle control rod had to be pulled in order to simplify the wiring. From the factory it had 2 separate wires to each switch plus a jumper that spanned from one common terminal...

Re: ENC Variable Frequency Drive
On both the mill and lathe I set the speed ranges at 30Hs to 90Hz in an effort to protect the motors. I set mine to run maximum 100hz, double the design speed of the ancient motor of my lathe; so far, it's holding together. I admit though, I rarely run it that fast. It sounds a bit loud when I do t...

Re: ENC Variable Frequency Drive
The foot brake pedal required some mechanical repair before braking could be set up through the VFD. The brake arm inside the cabinet was broken due to welds that didn’t penetrate. I removed the arm and pedal, cleaned up and welded the parts of the arm back together. The support bushings and screws ...

Re: ENC Variable Frequency Drive
if you mean that the foot brake disconnects the vfd from the motor...you probably do not want to do that That’s not at all what I wrote. The VFD quits sending power to the motor when it receives a “stop” instruction. Nothing gets disconnected. It’s all handled by software. It’s already configured t...

Re: ENC Variable Frequency Drive
Were they bothering to use a lower speed ratio on the head when they smoked the drive doing the hogging? It is a common mistake to think that full torque at low RPM replaced the need for torque multiplication by gear reduction needed for many heavy cutting operations... ESPECIALLY on lathes....but ...
