Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

I do fully intend to grind my own HSS tooling... but i figured insert tooling would take at least one variable out of the equation right from the get go. I've watched enough YouTube on grinding HSS that I think i understand most of the concepts, but I have yet to even attempt it. At least once i get...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

Just wanted to post an update. I received my PM 1022v on Friday July 19th. It took my wife and I the better part of a day to figure out how we were gonna get it lifted on to it's table. I didn't tear it completely down for cleaning... but I did disassemble the compound/slide/saddle because I had rea...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

Time for my 2 cents worth (not worth much these days). The OP is new to lathes. Thank you for your response. I did start out looking at the 7x14 mini lathes for all of the reasons you mentioned in your reply. I had posted my questions on several lathes forums that I had found. This journey started ...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

Thanks for the explanation. So back to my comment above.... Since I am just going to be learning how to use a lathe, I'm safe putting off purchasing a collet system until I gain some experience (and have a need). I'll be lucky to make 1 of anything.. and in all honesty, I image the first few months ...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

No matter what lathe you ultimately buy, get a 5c collet closer and 5c collets. Can you explain the benefits over just using the 3 jaw or 4 jaw chuck that is included? Keep in mind I am starting out with basically zero lathe skill/knowledge... so I assume this is something i wouldn't need up front....

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

The Grizzly machine and the PM machine most likely came from the same factory with different QA and paint before being crated, take a look at the manuals for both. I was looking for a mill and went with PM, it was less money and had power down feed ( didn't hurt that it was PA to NY was a short del...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

Im back again. So the Grizzly is 0752Z is not expected to be in stock until the middle of August. I have placed my order, but now I'm comparing it to a PM 1022V/1030V https://www.precisionmatthews.com/shop/pm-1022v-pm-1030v/. It seems to me the the 1022V with DRO is pretty close in specs to the 752Z...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

Buying used only works when you have an experienced person to take with you. There is a lot of worn-out garbage out there. That very nicely sums up my reasoning. I'm fine buying used equipment when i understand it and feel very comfortable with how it works. When it is something new to me... i dont...

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

Thanks for the reply's all. I guess I will go back and revisit the Grizzly's. I was happy that I had it narrowed down to two machines... but after everyone's comments I'll probably throw the grizzlys back in the mix.

Re: Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

A lot of people claim a lathe is the first machine you should get. I disagree completely. I find the mill a lot more useful. Well that just figures... A month ago I was sure I would be getting a mill first (Grizzly G0704)... but you comment above is what I kept hearing over and over... you should g...

Newbie - Buying first metal lathe

I'm about to purchase my first metal lathe. I am a total newbie but think this will be a great new hobby/skill for me. I think i have narrowed it down between these two Little Machine Shop machines: https://littlemachineshop.com/5200 and https://littlemachineshop.com/3595 I'm most likely going to ge...
