Re: Piston rings

Fyi this is a page from the worthington/simpson duplex boiler feedpump manual. As can be noticed there are 2 (that's two) piston rings. You can bring up any number of duplex steam pump scematics and there will ALWAYS be 2 (that's two) piston rings. In the last paragraph (if you can read) in the valv...

Re: Piston rings

Bill Shields - would you please explain why on earth that might happen. This pump was designed by someone who has disigned and developed the patterns, blueprints and castings of which many have been built successfully. Im sure if any of them had developed a slug of wet steam in them that he woldn't ...

Re: How to increase tightness between splined pieces?

There are companies that stock any spring imaginable or can custom make one to your specs. Onfortunatly as a hobby the cost factor enters into play. Belzona would work. There again it't hard to buy in very small quantities and is very pricey. Sometimes it's better to just redesign things if that's a...

Re: How to increase tightness between splined pieces?

There is a product called Belzona that is made for this purpose. It is a 2 part epoxie. They have a parting agent that is applied to one surface that prevents the two parts from being permanently glued together. I had a Kubota 4x4 with worn splines on the rear axles that I used it on 3 years ago. It...

Re: Piston rings

I have given the best discription of this pump and the way it works that I can as I see it. Only thing left to say is that it is working (with the two 0 rings per piston) and the exhaust ports in a quarter inch in from the cylinder heads. Anybody that has their own theories as to what is going on wi...

Re: Piston rings

It has already been explained. I'll try again. There (has) to be a steam cushion at the end of the piston stroke. There is no mechanical mechanism (ie flywheel/connecting rod) that prevents the piston from slamming into the cylinder heads. That being the case the steam inlets cannot serve as the exh...

Re: Piston rings

Desigs calls for 2 0 rings. That's the only way it will work. I have made 2 new pistons with 2 viton 0 rings and have run it on air. It seems to run fine. Havn't tried it on steam yet but I think it will work. As stated before this is a different animal. Thanks to everyone for the advice. The inform...

Re: Piston rings

Builder the drawing you posted is from the blueprints I have. The drawing I just posted is from the same blueprints. The animation you posted is an accurate depiction of how this works. The pump is completed and has been working. Just not on steam. I have ordered some Viton rings and will make a new...

Re: Piston rings

As can be seen the exhaust holes are drilled in 1/4" and 5/16" in from endcaps. They intersect with the steam inlet ports. As the piston is at it's maximum travel this port in covered up. As the piston starts its powerstroke the exhaust port is uncovered. (However) the valve prevents steam...
