Re: Smithy 1220 XL - 1/2" indexable tool recommendations
I wouldn’t say 1/2” tooling is too large at all. Rigidity is the key to making these combos work, along with sharp cutting edges. I have a Midas 1220xl, albeit newer than yours, and there is a learning curve. Making sure all the gibs are adjusted, the machine bolted to a solid surface and leveled, l...

Re: Concrete bench suggestions
Reality chimed in yesterday and told me no, I will not be using the wood top anymore. It also disagreed with it only taking an hour to move a 2500lb grinder 20ft into its final place. I have come to accept the lathe will be out of order for a couple weeks. There are some items I need to address on i...

Re: Concrete bench suggestions
Yes, time is valuable. As for material costs, most of what’s needed is freely available to me. Still, I will check the cost of plate. I have moved a 60 gal compressor and 2 workbenches today. The combo mill is next in line, and I think I will put some steel shims between it and the wood top temporar...

Re: Concrete bench suggestions
It’s been a bit since I’ve been on here, just dealing with life. My original plans for locations of my machine tools went to pot due to the depth of the grinder. The new plans require me to move everything, or at least everything that seems to be heavy. The grinder is going to have to live next to t...

Re: New guy
Well, I went and picked up the surface grinder today. Older gentleman, who looked for a hobby when he retired and took up machine tool collecting. Oh, I can guarantee he used them for an extreme hobby machine shop, but now is thinking he wants to get rid of them before he expires. I counted 5 surfac...

Re: Concrete bench suggestions
I get that a lot with homeowners wanting to drive on a new concrete driveway the day after it was poured. I don’t think it will be 30 days before moving it, but who knows what other things will come up during that time. Yes, through hole is what I was looking at, which will also help me locate the s...

Concrete bench suggestions
With the addition of a new machine toy, it looks like I’m going to be rearranging the old toys, and I’m going to remake a top for my Midas 1220xl since it’s being moved. Currently it is a heavy metal frame with a wooden top. I’ve wanted to get rid of the instability of wood for some time now, and af...

Re: New guy
Ok, I just looked it up. That would be a heck of a kit, too bad Heath died testing it. Reminds me of secondhand lions

Re: New guy
While I was never fortunate enough to be able to get any heath kits, I would guess a crystal radio. I’m hoping you’re not so old to say you remember the first one as a smoke signal kit at the trading post.

Re: New guy
Try allaboutcircuits forum. I tend to look at many different blogs for mostly refreshing my memory. Tubes are what I originally learned, with only a dabbling in digital back in the 90’s. Theory on them was interesting, but I haven’t dealt with them since then and have lost most of my knowledge on th...
