If you had a piece of allthread that was too long to use that setup, you could put the same slot in a coupling nut.

Lock the slotted coupling nut onto the long allthread and use it as a guide for a hacksaw.

There is no adjustment of that type available on a caliper.

A long shot would be to ensure that the rack and pinion is spotlessly clean. Dismantle and ultrasonically clean.

In line with the reply above, there are numbers on it. What is the distance in real world inches between some of those numbers? Printing/typesetting works in points, which I think are something like 1/72 of an inch.

It is called 'Swiss turning'. The stock does indeed extend progressively from the headstock as the turning proceeds.

why the complicated calculations? Because they are necessary. You say you want to transmit 1hp.
