Re: Clockwise Anti - Clockwise To Undo Machine Spindle Nuts
These 'point of view' discussions are often difficult. The way I see it is: If the nuts are opposite hand and facing in opposite directions, the loosening direction (from the same point of view) is the same. If moving the handle to the left, giving the bottom nut a clockwise motion as viewed from th...

Re: Dirt Bike Crank Disassembly Tooling?
If preservation of the plastic is paramount, I would consider a carbide drill or EDM to cut the crankpin out. With one side and the connecting rod removed there should be a lot more surface available to press the other side out. I suspect the plastic might have originally been considered expendable.

Re: removing an awkward flywheel
In addition to a stronger puller attachment (more and bigger bolts?) you might try a protective sleeve over the crankshaft that would permit use of a really heavy hammer or air hammer. Something like the old 'axle knockers' we used to use to knock the tapered axles out of brake drums. My dad used to...

Re: Piston Knurling
I well remember the piston knurling and Rancomizing machines. There were also flat springs that were inserted inside the skirts and pressed between the pin bosses and the skirt. There was a special plier-like tool to install them. They were called 'piston expanders'. There was also a hand tool with ...

Re: Round Ram Upgrade
Sure it is. Hey you got the pancake motor too ! This is going to be great. I think you need get your phases right by use of capacitors' balance. There is lots of info about that. I wouldn't care but those old motors( super long shaft and not top heavy ) are getting .... I want to look into that ......

Re: Engineers really know their stuff
It goes back a long way. I remember my Dad figuring out how to use a hole saw on the firewall to replace leaking freeze plugs in the rear of engine blocks. This was for Chrysler products in the 40's. He also did the same thing in the floor pan to check and add transmission fluid in a 50's Packard.

Re: Need to remove a broken tap in cast iron
A tap extractor can work if the tap is not bound too tight in the hole. If it is, a few heavy hammer blows on a suitable punch will sometimes free it up enough for the extractor to do the job.

I don't remember where I got them but I have some drill sets that have three small flats on the shanks.

Re: Need to remove a broken tap in cast iron
If you have enough time and patience, broken taps and the like can be removed by grinding the center out with a piece of brass tubing and abrasive such as automotive valve grinding compound.

Re: bridgeport handwheel clutch collar - ball stuck
I have had good results removing such stuck balls and broken dogbones where there seemed to be burrs by sticking a small tube to the ball, putting valve grinding compound into the hole, and gently pulling on the tube while rotating it to grind the burrs away.

Re: Newbie Quick Change Question For 6" Lathe
I seem to recall seeing, somewhere on the internet, a copy of an old article on building a QC gearbox for an Atlas 618. It may have been an old Popular Science article. I agree that it would be a major undertaking. I think CNC conversion would be easier.

Re: OT metric threads
While that works on principle, pencil mark on oily ways? I was wrong, I tried a pencil mark on a oily way and it was perfectly legible. If you have a thread dial it can also be used to catch the right point on the leadscrew as long as the carriage is within one revolution of the dial of the right s...
