Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question

The boilers were built in two batches, the first two were "OK". The second two were returned by me for the reason I mentioned above. What happened to the two that were returned I have no way of knowing. If this is one of the two returned the fire box was installed to high. I am the one who...

Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question

You are correct Bill S, that is how I found out there was something rotten in the boiler.

Re: Sweet Creek Mogul Boiler Question

That is a Sweet Creek boiler that RMI returned because they determined it was unserviceable. The firebox was placed so high in the shell that the crown sheet was in contact with the outer wrapper. Also the rear flue sheet was about 2" higher then the front flue sheet so the flues were not squar...

Re: Cool new board feature

Must be an old age thing, I thought something was wrong with the forum. Have to go back to "Board index" to get back to the section I was looking at. But I now see the four forums are down below the aggregate display. Guess I can get use to it.

Re: GS-1, finishing up the hard way

If the pipe is just for looks, you could use solid rod and get a better bend.

Re: David Rose

If you look in the foreground of the picture of Richard running David's Northern you can see the pond that was put in for steam boats at one of the meets at LALS, a rare one time event.

Re: quartering the eccentric crank

I've always made the eccentric rod to "fit" instead of to the "print" even with every part machined to print I've found as much .100" difference from side to side on the eccentric rod to make the loco run square forward and reverse.

My description is for locating the crank. But it also gives you the correct length for the eccentric rod.

Re: quartering the eccentric crank

I've not set up Baker, but I believe it should be the same as Walshart. You want to hold the input crank where when you move the forward-reverse lever the valve dose not move. Then measure the distance from the eccentric crank to the the input crank at both forward and reverse piston dead centers an...

Re: powered trucks

It depends on how close to the limit of traction you will run, with motors in parallel if one brakes traction all oil will flow through the slipping motor and the other will get no flow. I have built and run both series and parallel. the only one I would own and do own is series.

Re: Lackawanna Hudson

One reason for fuses is if you have wires running through conduit and you get a short it is a real pain replacing the wire that has fused it self to the conduit because the circuit breakers keeps resetting. Of course a manual reset circuit breaker would not have this problem. Jim Berryman knows all ...
