Re: Most Dangerous Machine
I applaud his industriousness, and understand he's working with what he has. Hopefully he finds a better use for his engineering degree.

Re: Eccentric Hole in Bearing
I think I'd look into boring the bearing and making a 660 bronze bushing to press in assuming there is part of the bore or a chamfer to indicate the offset and clock position accurately.

Re: Help identifying and duplicating this thread.
As for the thread profile, A cutter without sharp corners will go farther between sharpenings. A grinding wheel even more so, assuming the threads were ground. It's a dirty trick to leave you with maybe about 1/2 the effective thrust surface of an acme thread. The angle of the flanks make it even wo...

Re: Smokeless no smell cutting oil?
I like dark pipe threading oil. The sulfur in it provides good resistance to chip welding. It doesn't smell at all like rotten eggs, but I guarantee the smoke from it would be a point of contention. My shop is not attached, but there have been remarks when I come in the house after. Love me. Love my...

Pratt & Whitney History
Being a little bit of a WWII buff, I decided to check to see if the Pratt & Whitney machinery company was related to the aircraft engine company. I got my answer. https://www.prattandwhitney.com/History/ There's an abbreviated company history a little ways down the page. Near the bottom is a dow...

Re: MT3 to R8 Adapter
I am just now 42, does that mean in 40 years I won't remember this? I'll never make it that long, the first 40 was rough enough to get through, lol. But I look forword to trying. I suggest not getting old too quick. My medical insurance co. is getting close to having donated a new wing to the local...

Battleship New Jersey Machine Shop - A Closer Look
If I was offered a choice of just one machine, I'd have a tough time of it.

Re: "Put it in 'R' for Race"
According to the brochure, the headstock is '100% anti-friction'. http://www.vintagemachinery.org/pubs/1004/3598.pdf Gear oil is pumped up into a small reservoir in the top cover of the headstock that drains into some of the bearings. I can take the cover off of it to see if it fills in reverse. It ...

Re: "Put it in 'R' for Race"
Thanks for the help. The only info I’ve found on it is some sales literature over at Vintage Machinery. The machine had been protected and stored for 15 or 20 years. Before that it had been used in a millwright department. The motor is more modern. It’s mounted on a separate, fabricated stand with i...

"Put it in 'R' for Race"
I’ve recently gotten a 16 x 30 American Tool Works High duty lathe (gear head). Electrically and mechanically it has no provision to run in reverse. Is it possible that it isn’t ment to be run backwards? Maybe the lube pump in the head won’t pump in reverse? I’ll be driving it with a VFD, so reversi...
