I thought necessity is the mother of strange bedfellows.

Re: FS - 8 -1/2" dia. slotted faceplate

Likely is an Atlas. Looks like the one for my Atlas 12" lathe, only smaller.
Would work on a South Bend 9 or one of the smaller Logans as well.

Re: Slotting screw heads

If you had a piece of allthread that was too long to use that setup, you could put the same slot in a coupling nut. Lock the slotted coupling nut onto the long allthread and use it as a guide for a hacksaw. I had thought about using a hacksaw, but didn't think I could line it up well, but that woul...

Slotting screw heads

I needed to slot the ends of pieces of allthread so that I can adjust them and hold them while the nut on the other end is tightened. My mill is still in storage, but I have the lathe. I have a milling attachment, but I don't think the cross slide will move enough to get the top of the screw in the ...

Anyone need grippers?

As far as I could find, these are called grippers. Grippers.jpg What they are used for, I have no clue, but I know I don't need them. Can anyone use them? Free for the postage - probably a small flat-rate box. Preference given to long-time members (I once had someone with zero posts who joined that ...

Re: Anyone like shapers?

A "Shaper" is just a sort of "Linear Lathe". When I was at the Charles River Museum for a model engineering show years ago, they had a shaper operating. I asked the guy there why shapers even existed. He said that back then, it was easier to make an accurate sliding surface than...

Re: Anyone like shapers?

I have a friend whose dad was a retired Korean-era marine and grew up in the depression. Guys like that didn't buy stuff, they made it. When he found out what a new tow truck body cost, he said "we can make that", and went out and bought a press brake that two stories tall and had to have ...

I don't remember.

And it's now three days later, so another three things forgotten.

I learned something new today.

Problem is, I've forgotten two things.

And the day's not over yet.

Re: Yet another WHATZIT?

I found this oddball mic and the REALLY oddball thing is that the graduations are double normal size - when it says 0.100, the anvil has only traveled 0.050. IMG_20240226_180515.jpg It's for measuring the cutter on a line boring tool - the position of the anvil is radius, and doubling it gives you d...
