Re: Lathe, belt drive vs gear drive?
One real nice feature of a gear head is its easy to put the spindle in "neutral" to indicate parts, etc. Heaven help you if you ever screw up the gears in the head however. Belt lathes come in step pulley and variable speed - consider a variable speed if you can ( or put a VFD or DC motor ...

Re: 20" Rockwell Metal cutting band saw question
I've never looked at the wheels up close, but from some of the catalog pictures I have, it looks like the wood and metal wheels are different....my guess is that you would design the metal wheels for a heavier load. The wood wheels are strong however. I'm using a 20" Rockwell wood saw converted...

>>One thing nice about this lathe is that it has the metric gear attachement, but problem is, thats all it has, no inch gears and only the one size setup for metric.
Just curious...is it an inch lathe with metric threading gears or a full metric lathe with metric dials and leadscrew?

Re: Need a special drill chuck to help HS kids project
My Rockwell ( also the previous life versions as Walker Turner ) have this arrangement with a J33 taper on the spindle. As I recall, some older Sears DP's did this too. The "nut" is used both to draw the chuck onto the spindle and to remove it. Really, drawing it on is not a major problem....

Lever action tailstocks - are they of value?
I see these things on eBay every now and then.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25290&item=2524198208&rd=1 Does anyone have any experience with them? Are they of any real benefit to a HSM person? ( It appears you could make one for your own lathe if you couldn't ...

Re: Insert toolholder V. Toolpost holders
I have a Valentine insert holder that takes the triangular inserts held in a vertical orientation. It has a 1/2 shank. I also have a few ACME form cutting inserts that I got "somewhere" a long time ago. ( Keep them in the safe deposit box ). I also have made some AXA holders that will take...

Re: ELECTRO MECHANO (DRILL PRESS)
Spray paint the knob with DupliColor Clear Steel Wheel Paint ( from an auto parts store ). It will be glossy like the other and last quite a while.
