Re: Looking for a mentor and a place to use machines.

I was in the motorcycle business. A Dad would come in with junior and ask for the Best Motocross bike we have, junior would wipe out a list of all the stuff he needs added to the bike so he can WIN. So what bike do you have now ? None, this is his first, But has riden his buddies a couple times. And...

Re: Need coupling bored and key way broached

Take the 1" coupling and have a 3/16 keyway cut, a 10 minute job. As long as its not a blind hole, if a 2 piece coupling is what I assume it is.
Sent it to me the keyway is gratis, you pay shipping.

Re: Wanted 5C Collets

Tim, there is a way to get Drill # size collets. There are MT-1 and MT-2 size collets, These a tang end tapered collets used in screw machines. You would need an adapter MT to straight but they are easy to find. The collets show up sometimes on ebay, I have 10 pounds or so of these if you wanted som...

Re: Wanted 5C Collets

Just a question, what do you need to hold Number drill size work, if just shortening the length, absolute accuracy is not needed, if center drilling, a threaded collet would be a better choice, as the surface finish on threads is not conducive to concentric. Hardinge will make you any size you want,...

Re: Steam Turbine Question

A couple things to also consider. How far from the throttle valve is the turbine , air has less viscosity than steam, possible excessive distance allows the steam to expand to much before entering turbine. Have you put a pressure gauge just before the turbine entry, compare pressure air vs steam. I ...

Re: WTB 60T 18DP Aluminum Gear

Are you sure you want AL for the gear, Bronze or iron seems more common in that application. I do have a full set of 18dp cutters, Not sure the PA, need to measure the last ones I cut to be sure. Does the gear have a Hub, Keyway, bushing? Let me know if you would like me to cut one for you. You coul...

Re: Strategies for Removing Rocks from Yard

I lived atop a mountain for many years. My driveway and area under the house was Bedrock. I rented a small backhoe to dip out big ones in the way. If you have some area around a big rock that is dig able. Just dig a bigger, deeper hole next to the rock, then roll the rock into it. You don't need mas...

Re: What type of Drill Rod for Axles?

Your math is faulted, The speed limit is the speed of the bearing, not the needle themselves. 6 mph is 528 feet per minute, a 6" wheel runs at 350 rpm, a 2" wheel runs at 1100 rpm.
The issue with needle bearings is dirt entering an unsealed bearing, kills them quickly.

Re: What type of Drill Rod for Axles?

The name drill rod applies to a dozen types of steel. All of which can be hardened, and available in Fractional, Numeric, Metric, and Letter sizes. If you want exact sizes, you need to buy material which is TGP Type. That is Turned, Ground, Polished, and many sizes can be PH which means Pre hardened...

Re: Magnetic chuck for Milling machine?

In addition to what has already been stated, the flatness of the mounting face is the real issue. a piece of hot rolled steel will move with very little force, while a plate that is ground would take quite a lot to be moved.

Overall a bad idea, that will certainly lead to dramatic issues.

Re: Threading to a shoulder?

Eyeing up the parts, it looks like you can extend the bore for the ballseat a couple threads, then use a parting tool to relieve the last threads at the shoulder.

Re: Angle plate

I use a hammer and a driver, to drive them out with the head setting on hardwood blocks , at zero degrees. I have a tilting plate with tee slots to hold the head for machining. But not enough clearance without adding blocks when driving them out. I made spacers for the guides when driving them in, s...
