Re: Coles New Corliss Engine (Not the original one)

I have one of the last corliss engines Cole's had. It is a nice piece. Since Cole's is history, I have not seen anyone pick up the model. The widow was trying to sell the model collection, she responded to an email I had sent, but she did not follow through with photos and information. I've not hear...

Re: oil cups in scale or close

The felt idea is a very good one. My loco had been built with standard grease zerks. I removed them when the rods were rebushed, take a 1/4 x 28 set screw and cut off the portion below the hex, pack a piece of felt into the hole, set screw on top. The felt lubes the bushing, and stops any dirt from ...

Re: Covid Creations

My yard is tight as well, though not as tight as this. I was thinking of a run to a turntable, spin the loco 180 + degrees and pick up another line back to the shed.

Re: Crosshead Guide Material

4140 PH is closer to 25-28 HRC in hardness. Key stock may well be on size, but is usually made of junk steel. If you want On Size material, look at any of the tool steels. they are all sold in annealed condition, and can be on size to a few thou. Look at the online sites to find you needs. Sites lik...

Re: Recommendation for smokebox fasteners?

I am currently working a a well used 60 year LE Pacfic.the the smokebox stack held on with steel bolts and nuts, 5-40 size, one broke 3 fought all the way off. The smoke box cover with brass bolts, brass nuts, no issue in removal. Other places brass should have not been used, guide rails, broke bolt...

Re: Wanted - threaded steel balls, 5/8-11

Wrap a piece of .010-.015 brass around the ball, leaving extra at each end, which is then bent up like rabbit ears. Grab the ears with pliers and tighten the grip, now chuck it in the lathe.
Grind a small flat to drill a spot, then drill and thread.

Slide Valve Setting

The long Story, I purchased an old !" LE Pacific. Very much used, Drive rod bushings, Linkage pivots, and a damaged cylinder from when the nut came off the piston pushrod. At that point it was parked for the last 40 years. Pressure tested the bolier, all good, Removed liners bored out, made piston a...

Re: Necessity of hardened crank pins on 3/4” scale

I have a HT oven and do small parts often. 4140PH is hardened to about 26HRC and needs no further heat treatment, and can be machined with HSS or carbide. If the model will get a lot of use consider full HT to the part. You should not use Cherry Red on tool steels like A2,4140, D2 as they already ha...

Re: Handling Bulk Flat Spring Material

A buddy of does clocks, and unwinding coiled springs is a daily occurrence. He has an old blanket that wraps around the spring, and he clips the wire through a hole in the blanket. No drama.

Re: Crank Pin Alignment

I had purchased an unfinished project pacific. The machine work was just awful. The drivers were loose on the axle, and keyways filed loose to allow the drives to fit the rods etc. To fix the mess, the drivers were broached larger keyways, larger axle bore, and redo the crankpin holes. The drivers w...

Re: Looking for a mentor and a place to use machines.

I was in the motorcycle business. A Dad would come in with junior and ask for the Best Motocross bike we have, junior would wipe out a list of all the stuff he needs added to the bike so he can WIN. So what bike do you have now ? None, this is his first, But has riden his buddies a couple times. And...
