Re: Fixing the electrics in my old German mill Ruhla 250/710

If it was me with such anxiety level. I would disconnect all power loads like motors. Then power up the thing with a couple light 100W light bulbs (each in parallel) and then in series with the line. Limiting the current to about (230/200) 1.15A Max. Cold filaments have low resistance giving low dro...

Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes

To create draft you can angle the rotary table with a spacer and use a regular end mill.
I do not quite understand the concern about creating fillet IF they are the type where metal can be removed later on the lathe.
Yes draft is mandatory.

Re: Fixing the electrics in my old German mill Ruhla 250/710

The diode is good for any coil that is DC driven.
For coils AC driven a MOV rated Higher than the line voltage or a RC snubber as John described. R + C in series rated for line voltage.
TVS are like 2 Zener diodes back to back they are a Semiconductor "equivalent" of the MOV

Re: Fixing the electrics in my old German mill Ruhla 250/710

Your relays will be fine. A transient protector in parallel with each coil could lengthen contact life. ...lengthen contact life of the driving relay. AC snubber you can start with R=1/2 x Rcoil and C = 0.47uF or less X Rated Capacitors are NOT rated as Movies Values have wide latitude when one has...

What can be toxic is the fumes from a selenium rectifier that is in the process of burning out.

Re: The dumb ideas I get sometimes

I have cast lead items in a wood mold. Dry it and pre-heat it in the oven. You can cast a couple of parts before it deteriorates.
Somebody may have a heart attack reading this but in the end is getting the job done.
