Re: Electrical Wiring DOES Degrade with Time

I have a very low use example of the US made (pre-import) 20" Wilton VSG heavy duty drill press. I took it out of commission for a few months after noticing that the sheathing on the red wire had become brittle and very fragile. In a number of locations where there is no movement or flexing oth...

Re: My band saw broke!!

Very nice indeed. If I produced one applying all my "skill", it would not be nearly so nice.

Re: Purchasing a Hendey Lathe

I love the old gear heads, and Hendey are right in there. However, for me, most simply can't run fast enough. They were built for carbon steel and hss bit speeds in steel and CI, so if you are turning smaller diameters, aluminum, want to use inserts, etc. that can be an issue.

Re: My band saw broke!!

You comment regarding "parts saving reason" is exactly what I was originally thinking. By creating a "fuse" it's limiting the max torque that can be forced through the system breaking more expensive, harder to replace, or dangerous parts. As far as modern computer software detect...

Re: My band saw broke!!

I misunderstood and thought you were going to eliminate the groove as not necessary, but now I see it was the sharp (tiny fillet) corners you were talking about. Thanks for clearing it up.

Re: My band saw broke!!

As always, very nice. But I'm a bit confused, I must be missing something. With just the material alone it's (presumably) way stronger than original and likely a moot point, but it looks like you put the extra (not quite?) square corner grooves back in that I thought you were saying weren't required...

Re: My band saw broke!!

I may be misinformed, but axle shafts sometimes feature a necked down portion that I've been lead to believe is specifically for that purpose. Particularly in front shafts. Maybe a myth, but I've heard that argument put forward for other things as well. However, these instances are "neck down&q...

Re: My band saw broke!!

Nice work (as always).

Mine hasn't failed yet, but sounds like the design makes it likely at some point. I wonder if that was intended to be some sort of torque limiting fuse?

Re: Castor wheels for the mill

Pallet jack is also my go to. Everything is mobile, and everything is solid/stable, all without having to buy/build a bunch of mobile bases. I even built a pair of cross beams (between forks) from 1/2 x 3" angle iron so that I only have to have a 1/2"+ gap to easily pick up and go. The onl...

Re: MT3 Dead Center

Certainly. But while he mentioned ideas for regrinding himself, it seemed like his main focus was a service to send it out for in a "get it done and move on" sort of approach.

Re: MT3 Dead Center

I just realized I likely misunderstood the original post. I thought he was planning to use this in spindle of the SB lathe for turning between centers (generally a live center in ts). But now I see that was not what was stated. But rereading, it's not clear what the application may be, or how import...

Re: MT3 Dead Center

Are you sure you need it? I used to use a dead center just because it came with my lathe and an appropriate adapter. My new lathe did not. Even before the new lathe I had started using a short drop of steel in the 3 jaw. With a small step so it can't be pushed back, and with the pointe turned in pla...
