Re: Ratchet wheel

I make them from drill rod, slice them off, heat them indirectly to avoid burning the tips of the teeth, and plop them (quench) into a can of oil. Temper in heated sand, and you're done. Easy Peasy. Once you've made a set you'll wonder what all the fuss and apprehension was about. I can't recall how...

Possibly 3/8"NPT, . . but I haven't finalized the line fittings so I don't yet know for certain.

Flexible Air Compressor Connector

I don't have any experience with connector products so I'm in need of some advice on picking one of the above to connect a small (1.5hp/2cyl) air compressor to a steel distribution line. Maximum regulator setting will be 80psi. The compressor itself is bolted down a wood floor and the air line is al...

Re: Making handrail columns

I agree. I knew I'd need to look around to see what others have devised for ball cross-drilling jigs and Greg has a good one. I do have a question for Greg . . . when you mount a completed post post in the collet for cross-drilling I assume this isn't eyeballed perpendicular, that some accurate mean...

Re: Making handrail columns

I knocked off a couple of rough samples in aluminum (with my home-built radius attachment) and came up with these. The one on the left is a little too fat, and the ball is too big, and the one on the right is a little too skinny and the ball is a bit too small. I've sketched up one between the two t...

Re: Making handrail columns

Very nice work. And a good option. I considered using separate balls, and haven't entirely discarded the idea, but since I only have a dozen to do I'll put my radius turning tool to work.

Re: The handrail conundrum

While on the subject of handrails (and posts) can anyone point me to drawing of a well proportioned ball head, tapered shank (etc) post? I'll be looking for something I can use to take proportions from, not necessarily dimensions.

Re: Share your special tools

Greg,
Note that ours are ¾-round, per Karl's sketch, and I've never found a commercial source of anything but ½-round.
