Re: Table tram

How did you go about the test, Bill? For a meaningful result, the indicator should be pivoted via the spindle bearings. If you traversed the indicator by moving the X & Y members, the results define the knee (sag in either direction), but not the relationship between the table and spindle. I really ...

Re: P7 tender truck bearings: existing ball or refit for roller or needle?

<snip> or should I use a brass thrust washer between the journal and the wheel flange? If I do so the bearing inner diameter to axle fit will have to be slightly loose to allow the axle to move a bit laterally in the journal. I have no experience with what you describe----but I'm of the opinion tha...

I don't shave. Ever. Not a problem.

Can you tie knots in your beard? :D
Curly hair. That's automatic.

Unless you get your beard caught in a piece of rotating equipment.
Ouch!
Fortunately, I keep it short (scissors).
The last time my face saw a razor was back in '64.

Re: A topic for Glenn or Harold re: metrics

Lol, I was thinking to myself exactly the same when I made that post. :-) But this sort of proves it's better to stick with the measurement system your most familiar with since it reduces the chances of simple mistakes. NASA even learned that with trying to land one of there expensive probes inside...

Re: best way to get started?

I agree with Greg, too. The level of frustration experienced by the guy who knows little about machining is exacerbated by using inferior machine tools. Much like trying to do tenths work using a caliper (be it vernier, dial or digital). It's extremely difficult to do precision work when the machine...

Re: A topic for Glenn or Harold re: metrics

That's when the light came on. Instructions were for 1 kg (220 pounds). A 55 pound bag is ¼ kg. Oh dear Harold I think you just proved your own point about not being able to transition to metric. 1kg is 0.22 pounds, not 220) and a 0.55 lbs bag is a ¼ kg I know everything is bigger over there on the...

Thanks, guys! New to me!
I agree with what happens to glass beads. They are shattered when used with too much pressure. Might just as well use crushed glass in that case, and it's a lot cheaper to buy.

Re: best way to get started?

Interesting comment, F. I agree whole heartedly. Especially the thought on how to grind a lathe tool. Those who lack that skill have little idea how badly they are held captive by the lack of ability to do so. Interestingly, it's not all that hard to do, but it does require some practice and underst...
