How about the air compressor from a Lincoln Town Car. They used it to inflate the ride cushion bladders. Very quiet. I found one used on eBay.
Do you happen to know the maximum pressure it can develop?

Re: youtube ads increasing?

I use an extension for Firefox that strips out the YouTube ads and sponser vids on the fly. I can look up what it is later if anyone is interested. G Please do. I often listen to music on YouTube. They've started interrupting songs mid-coarse for 5 second ads. What a shameless bunch of greedy peopl...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

Yep! It would. I suspect the color is attributed to the slight oxidation of the chromium contained in the alloy. Industrial heat treat furnaces often balance the atmosphere by simply introducing excess gas (not electric furnaces, needless to say), which would also most likely yield less color. Proba...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

While it's not even remotely related to your project, I used 17-4 for the item shown, below. It's the auger for a wheat grinder. I converted an old foreign made hand grinder so it could be powered by my lathe. You can see how 17-4 looks after heat treat. Discolored rather uniformly, and pretty much ...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

No. Not a hardened version. It should be condition A, so you can harden the parts after machining. The condition of the offered material is probably H-1150, so it's much softer than the H-900 condition that would provide the greatest wear and brinelling resistance condition. If you make that materia...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

Since I would have to use HSS to provide the form tool producing the rather large bearing surface at one shot, I imagine that 17-4 PH could be a problem with chatter and work hardening. If you are not familiar with 17-4, it's an interesting experience. It machines beautifully, although it is not fr...

Re: Bearing race nomenclature

Explore commercial thrust bearings imported from China. Not suggesting that's a solution, but it could be. Dunno. Not familiar with the jack in question. They may not fit. If push gets to shove and you must make new races, you should achieve acceptable results making them from 17-4 PH stainless. It'...

Re: Fixing grinding/interference on bevel gears

The tops of teeth should NOT make contact. Filing the face of teeth to ensure that they do is a mistake.

I question your assessment that the bearing location is intended to create proper lash of the gears. That makes no sense.

Re: WTB 1/2" NPT Male Close Nipple Fitting (0.5" OAL, diameter taper on each end, Brass or 316 Stainless)

Close pipe fittings are the length they are of necessity. If you shorten one, it isn't likely to fit where you intend to put it unless you have some control over the diameters of the threads in question. For that reason, I highly recommend you provide more information, including how you intend to us...

Re: Hoping to be more active

Sigh! No end to sadness and sorrow. I'd like to express my condolences, Ed, and assure you that your presence here makes a difference. I was aware that you had been away, but I had no idea why. How I wish it would have been for a less painful reason. As NP317 said, Susan and I will be sending positi...

Tom's experience mirrors mine. To add to the problem, the laser on my sliding saw works if or when it feels like it. I have not been successful in determining why.

Re: Bought a Hardinge Sjogren No2 D1-4

I checked my spindle and it runs true, it appears to be the chuck that has the issue. If I remove the 4 socket head screws from the work side of the chuck, will I be able to index it around to reduce the runout? I don't know. I would think that the assembly is pinned, so it can't move, but I could ...
