Re: Cable drive surface grinders - about that cable...

HI Russ. I've rebuild a few grinders that used flat metal bands on them, no cables. One wrap should be sufficient to drive a grinder table. More than one wrap may be hard to keep in place while you connect everything on the ends. I adjust the metal band types to slip just a bit if i hold the table f...

Re: How are machine tools made?

I worked at Ingersoll Milling Machine for many years, I'm in there again on contract for a few months. The big mills we built were all made of components that had been machined on other big mills. a normal table for a mill with 150 feet of x travel was about 35 feet long. there would be two tables o...

Re: water in elec motors

I recently worked on a surface grinder with a motor problem. The cross feed motor was full of oil and would kick out the overload. I took it to my motor winding shop to have him figure out what to do. He took the motor apart and put the stator in his rotary aqueous parts washer. The detergent wash r...

Re: Into the Head - Bridgeport 2J2 Variable Speed

To remove the aluminum bearing carrier, I start by bolting the entire pulleyto the table with a t slot stud. This lets you put all your effort into prying off the housing and not into trying to stabilize the pulley etc. I use two 18 inch pry bars , one on either side of the housing and just pry it u...

Re: Interpret this thread cutting advice for me

I learned to thread using the compound set at 29.5 degrees and just advancing the compound. I have done threading just suing the cross slide and dont feel as comfortable with that method. I think that is a personal practice preference. I do hold my hand on the cross slide wheel to keep it from drift...

Re: Into the Head - Bridgeport 2J2 Variable Speed

When the top bearing is not supporting the spindle extension hub, it does wobble quite a bit even with a new bearing. The next lower housing should not have to come off to remove that shaft, there are bolts that hold the brake housing in place that go in from the top. Most rattling and knocking i ha...

Re: Into the Head - Bridgeport 2J2 Variable Speed

The fixed side of the spindle drive pulley is pressed on to the extension hub. The bottom of that piece is also the brake drum. You need to remove the housing that the shaft and pulley are part of. I dont normally remove the fixed pulley from the shaft. Noises from the varispeed drives is normally a...

Re: Lagun mill bushings for head rebuild

If you cant get Garlock 2040's get Garlock 3040s and cut them down. sometimes the longer bushings are avvailable when the 20's aren't. i just made a small 40 mm slug to put in the bushing and chuck on the od of the bushing i want to save, and trim off the rest with a lathe turning tool. 3040's last ...

Re: Windows Vista with a headache. Any help?

If you have the Vista install disk, you should be able to boot the computer with it in the drive. Eventually it will prompt you to either install windows vista or 'repair the computer' That is the option to click. Not that it will cure the problem either As far as computer proficiency, We sit next t...

Re: DIY hydralic cylinder for my press ???

Some other considerations when you are making this cylinder Are the piston seal sizes easy to obtain? Do you have a good method of sealing the endplates to the cylinder tube? Again are those seals easy to find? The piston needs to be long enough in the bore to prevent it from tipping and jamming, th...
