Plenty of steam radiators here in Maine, and the graphited string packing is what is used on the shut off valve stems.

Gold electroplating…..
Brass will still tarnish under lacquer it just tarnishes more slowly. And lacquer will darken over time.

I don’t know about California, but here in the Northeast $8,500 will buy you a darn nice used American made substantial lathe. Something along the line of a LeBlond Regal or a nice 13” South Bend and probably reasonably well tooled.

less parts all seems like a good idea until someone runs through the closed switch and derails and entire train full of cars and or damages the switch because something is now bent the, all of a sudden -> that $4 spring seems like a good idea. As above, not dry, I used way oil, I will try breaking the edge and using 90 weight as soon as I get the plumbing buttoned up. And lowering the test pressure. I'm a bit over the .125" pin, I am using a no. 8 bolt - about .164". I would use lighter oil for running on air. Way oil has additives to ma...

Yankee Shop/ Friend’s Tiger, an early American 4-4-0 also had no counter weights.
