Re: New Here

I'm reading through this post and enjoying every syllable. Everybody has had a kick at the poor old rusty Cardiff; now, as Paul Harvey would have said, it's time for "the rest of the story". V8 BUG I ended up buying this lathe from old Tommy Harvey, probably you looked at it right before I...

Re: Clausing 8520 Question

The previous owner was an local to Dallas older gentleman who used it as a drill press to restore old outboard motors. He wore the quill gears so badly the shaft openings in the cast cover are worn oval and will have to be bored and bushed. James Rice Sherman, TX You don't happen to know his name, ...

Re: 9 inch Southbend lathe question

That's quite true, they advertised it as such, but I couldn't make that happen with the flat belt on there. Also, with the serpentine belt I don't have to use back gears either. But honestly, taking that much material off a piece of stock in one cut is something I only did as an experiment, because ...

Re: 9 inch Southbend lathe question

I have a South Bend 9A that came with a 3/4 hp single phase motor. Even with that much power, I experienced problems with the spindle bogging down and stalling, followed by the flat belt slipping off the cone pulleys, usually when trying to take cuts approaching 0.040" deep. The problem was alw...

Re: Show us your restored lathe- before and after!

Thanks for the kind words, here is a view of the starboard side of the powerhead on the 1914 Hiawatha rowboat motor (sold by Montgomery Ward, its actually a badge-engineered "Spinaway"). The carb is nothing more than a simple poppet valve type mixer. The needle valve is also the gas shut-o...

Re: Restorations....let's see what you did....

Nice to see what other folks are capable of doing with respect to restoring their machinery. There is some truly amazing work going on out there Myself, I do not consider what I do to be restorations. As a (largely self-taught) mechanic and a machinist both, IMHO I've not graduated past the "ha...

Finished what repairs I could on the gearbox. Made a new idler shaft to replace the bent one and replaced every bushing. It works better, and is noticeably quieter. The gentleman who suggested that the 48 tooth gear might be a big part of the problem probably had it right. Flat belt will still come ...

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. I did some trials running the lathe with the apron removed from the equation, and we can safely eliminate the apron as a probable cause and focus on the gearbox. Disengaging the gearbox levers allows the input gear to be turned easily by hand. Engaging the levers in t...

Logan model 820 problems

Having a few issues with my machine and wondering if anybody can point me in the right direction with respect to diagnosis and repair suggestions. I'm not well schooled enough in the finer points of evaluating certain parts of these machine tools to feel confident in making an accurate diagnosis. Th...
