Re: fuel topic

I burn alcohol in my 1:32 scale Aster 'Light Mikado' engines. Normally I burn some form of methanol, but I have tried Ethanol and Isopropyl. Ethanol was wonderful, but the tax on booze is way too high to use the stuff as a hobby fuel! (Nice for race cars that win big prizes!) Methanol is quite varia...

Re: fuel topic

Burning anything that has carbon in it is going to create CO2 (and CO). All that soot coating the flue tubes, smoke box, stack and your face from coal is unburned carbon that is not entering the atmosphere as CO or CO2.

Re: Axle Pump Oddity

The only problem with the cup type washer is that, while it may make a good seal when the ram is moving IN, (pumping OUT), it can collapse on the intake cycle and suck air around it, if the intake piping is blocked or even partially restricted. Since air might get into the cylinder, and it is compre...

Re: Boiler, home made!

DO NOT pressurize with air! FILL the boiler (and I mean FULL) with water (no AIR at all) then pump in a bit more water. You'll be shocked at how quickly the pressure rises to unbelievable values with just a couple of pumps with a small hand-operated water pump. . If you use air, any failure will be ...

If I may presume you are using Windows of some flavor... use the MS Paint program that comes with Windows. . Read this whole posting before you do anything... the process is really, REALLY simple, just a few clicks and a few keystrokes that are fairly intuitive once you understand the process... it ...

Oh my! REAL steam... big and brutish and "get 'er done" steam. Focus on just the engine and you can't tell the scale at all.
