It was still wrapped in cardboard with the shipping paperwork on it. A foot long piece if 1" x 4" 4142.

I just looked, and Online metals wants $346.76 for an 18" piece. :shock: :shock:

I finally got around to solving an uncommon problem yesterday with my lathe. I use a bed turret 95% of the time, but once in a great while I need to use the tailstock. Sounds like a technique issue. Too much pressure being applied to the slide of the caliper and holding the standards out at the tips of the jaws.

Glenn-- Would you start off with a small HSS lathe blank? Just tune up what is there. No real need for another tool bit. You can grind a square tool bit into a triangle shape if needed. Your tool holder may work with round HSS tool bits as well. I use a similar setup for grooving tools and just tun...

Try not to stick the boring bar out past the tool holder any farther than needed for rigidity.

Hanging it out as far as you have it can induce chatter.
