Steam Chest Backhead Parts No. 2127 and 4127

Here's the final product: IMG_4542s.jpg These were made from one 6-inch-long bar of steel turned between centers, leaving a disc between the fingers to facilitate holding in the mill vise. The taper is a lot closer to the prototype than Mr. Coventry's original design. I also fancied-up the sleeves a...

The word 'standard' translated

For the majority of my working career I was active on quite a few National Standards committees. "Standard" does not really represent something as being good or even appropriate for the application. "Standard" is the lowest level of quality that the lowest quality participating o...

Make #2127 back to back as Siamese pair

Yes, that was the light that came on.
I intend to make Parts #2127 back to back as Siamese pair in the lathe, then mill, then part off.

Thank you Bill and Odyknuck for your very kind comments.

Regards,
Andy

Steam Chest Backhead Progress ... Sort of ...

Here's my concept of the Steam Chest Backhead Parts No. 2127 and 4127 assembled: IMG_4541s.jpg Note the many differences from Mr. Coventry's 1929 drawing. Bill Shields has recommended not showing the bad stuff, but part of the reason for this thread is to aid my memory. A friend was experimenting wi...

Flanges for the B&O P7d Cincinnatian

Harold, You are too kind.

For these flanges, hardness is not a principal criterion. The size and resulting forces are small.

I am currently making the packing followers out of solid instead of fabricating and silver soldering.
So far it seems to be easier than anticipated.

Andy

Re: Stuart Turner 5a Build

Very nice work.
You are inspiring me to build another stationary engine ... as if there are not enough projects.
Again, very nice work

Cylinder Backheads Part No. 2126

Russ N, Thanks for the encouragement! I have been busy working on deferred maintenance on two of my other steamers, so the P7d has been neglected. IMG_4537s.jpg These rear cylinder heads were turned from a chunk of brass, and a pair of shapes milled, then all were silver soldered together. A bit of ...
