Clearance btwn firebox and frame
I’m “scratch bashing” a little Porter mogul. Thanksgiving day it became chassis on air. On to the boiler. I have the Allen mogul drawings for a “go-by” of sorts, but it looks like the firebox is wider than the distance between the frame rails there. Given that the sides of the firebox are going to b...

flare fittings - which angle?
Valve gear is about wrapped up, I need to start thinking about chassis on air.
I see flare fittings are recommended in the smokebox, there are 37 degree and 45 degree flares, The 37 supposedly holds more pressure but requires sleeves.
What are folks successfully using?
thanks

Re: Engine Truck
Those that are saying you need a large vertical travel - are those trucks just sprung, or are they equalized with the drivers? I am sprung and equalized with the front drivers on my mogul, which has not seen track yet. It's built just like Mr. Porter intended. Not much travel in the leaf springs. Pl...

Re: Engine Truck
Look up "Bissell Truck" for an in depth explanation of the "leading" aspect of the lead truck and how it works. The lead truck should pivot R-L around a point quite behind it, which can be determined by mathematical formula.

Re: Brass
If your brass polish (I'm looking at you Brasso) has ammonia in it, it will increase the rate of corrosion. Ammonia fumes can in fact be used to put a brown patina on brass.

Hi, I'm looking for a supplier of Brass tubing other than McMaster Carr, MSC, or Grainger. Need sizes from 1/8" up to 3/8" total length about 60' of each size. In the Ohio area. Thanks. Check Speedymetals.com and onlinemetals.com. Note I have had shipping delays out of the second one, bes...

Re: Laird Crossheads
There are two kinds - the ones that use two guide bars with the CH sliding between them. This is what I sometimes see in models, like Fitchburg. The ones that used one CH guidebar and the CH kinda "wraps" around it. This is what I see on lots of Porters. These can be whittled out of chunk-...

Re: Eccentric Hole in Bearing
Easy. Put stock in lathe. Turn OD. Put DI on stock and use chuck jaws to move it over offset dimension. If I am reading your drawing right, that is square root of 8 units.

I am not seeing 303 tubing on the market, I see 304, 321, and 316.. If the 303 is better, where does one get it?

Re: boiler heads and fittings
The soft solder suggestion on the other board is why I suggested you come here. Those folks are going to comment whether or not they have a clue. Soft solder looses too much strength with temperature. The 30 psi steam will be at about 264 degrees f. Soft solder melts as low as 360f. It will already ...

Re: slide valves very hard to move.
I used way oil because the valve was a bit hard to get started moving, but then would slide (at lower pressures). Way oil - yes, it has "tackifiers" to make it cling to surfaces, and is engineered to prevent "sticktion", which is what I was seeing, so it seemed like the ideal sol...
