you can buy the round bar in approx 13" lengths and mill it square, thats what i do

I highly recommend the black flux over the white. It is much easier to remove after silver soldering than the white. You might want to try the safety-silv 56, i think it flows better than the 45

Hello Kerrywil I am also building a shay based of Kens 3 truck shay castings. you may want to consider assembling it from pieces of pre hardened 4140 ground shafting and cold rolled steel bars for the crank throws. press or loctite throw assemblies on a long shaft and taper pin the joints then cut main shaft out of crank throws

any idea why there is a weld bead around the upper half of the barrel a few inches in front of the firebox?

there is no reason to use hot rolled if he is not milling them out. i would use cold rolled. a good laser should be able to cut to +/- .003

the steam tractor dimensions are a little too big to be a 1" scale minnie. maybe a 1 1/2" allchin or something else
