Re: Setup of roller box tool on turret?

JPFALT Been a long time. Turn a spot to your finish diameter with the crosslide tool. Than you can set the rollers, and your tool on that spot to proper dia. The tool should lead the rollers just a little bit (maybe 1/32"). You'll have to fine tune the diameter under full cutting load. Chamfer ...

Re: Cutting Rates

Unka jessie,

What kind of planer you got?
Looks like 1/16 feed x 3/8 depth of cut.
Don't you love it when they go thud on the floor?

Harold, That's an excellent writeup by somepne who knows. Someone asked about adjust true chucks. The adjust trues will mar the work sometimes because the jaw edges will sometmes grip the work. A soft jaw bored as Harold says to the grip dia...

Re: dog closed

I used to make chain when I was a kid. Wrapped wire around a mandrel like a spring, than cut the links off with some dikes, and soldered them. But that was brass wire. Steel, you could run the wire thru a torch flame, wrap it around a flat mandrel (shaped like the chain id) using a spring winding at...

Re: Source for deckplate?

sncf, I would be interested to find out how you make out with that knurl. May be just the thing, may not. You're gonna put a lot of stress in that material. Don't know if it's gonna track right. When you get to it, put up a picture. Riding Rail Kits had nice etched walkways for 1" scale at Cabi...

Re: Sizing piston o-rings

Cpr,
I would guess a couple thou per side.
Any more and you get excess friction in the cylinders.
You can expect to replace them a couple times till you get a nice burnish in your cylinders.
I used them in a couple of engines and they work ok.
Why not make real piston rings?

Re: Source for deckplate?

John, I cut miniature diamond plate on the shaper. I set a piece of 1/8 inch stock in the vise with 1/16 protruding. Set the vise at 30 degrees and with a shallow V nose tool cut "Vs" every .05 spacing about .02 deep. Than rotate the vise to 30 degrees the other way and cut again. Done a c...

Re: Flash steam

Briggs boilers have been written up in me, and live steam.
They use coils, or vertical tubes instead of a loco type firebox.
The front of the boiler is a firetube boiler.
They are popular down under.

Re: Worked on rotary table today

Michael, Nice looking job. I mounted a sub plate on my Enco table with a .375 hole in the center it years ago. Tapped 5/16 holes all over it. Those four slots seldom come where I wanted a clamp on small jobs. Small jobs fell right thru the center hole. Now I have a pile of pins to fit every size hol...

Re: Line Bore job.

cprucha, That's a nice looking rig. It brings back memories. We used to bore "Bell "cylinders for the steel industry at Koppers Co in Baltimore. . We had a bar with a "traveling head" fed by a feed screw with a star wheel. We set the cylinders in a 36" American lathe on Vee ...

Here's the over the top tool at MSC I was talking about.
It's made by Dorian tool.
I assume you have to rough that material off some way.

Re: Blue chips are the target; sparks are too fast.

If you are making powder you are just wearing the tool.
Increase the feed till you are making a clean chip.
Tools seem to hold up best for me making a golden, to brown chip.
